Help with Circus settings

Tonight, I am taking my granddaughter to the Shriner's Circus. I will be taking my E420 with 40-150mm lens. Any suggestions on ISO, aperture and shutter speed? Keep in mind, no flash is allowed. I will probably tote my monopod for help with stabilization though.

I am a Canon person but Might be able to help here a little. Personally I would set your Olympus on manual mode. ISO 1600,f/4.0 (your lowest setting on that lens), and shutter as fast as you can get it in the lighting you have. Unfortunately, this will give you noise in the photos but you should be able to stop the action in low light, at least in many of the photos. Lighting will change a lot (spot light) but I would just change the shutter speed to compensate. If by chance there is a lot of light and you are able to get the shutter speed over 1000, adjust the ISO down a notch to eliminate some of the noise and slow the shutter speed to get clear pictures. Hope this helps. Flash will likely be banned or ineffective so utilize your settings. Hope you get some great pictures.

Thanks Bill. Yeah, as I noted, "no flash photography" allowed. I thought about jacking the ISO up, not not quite that high. I was thinking about 800. I'll do some quick test shots and play it by ear (or eye) once I'm in the venue. But, your tips is where I'll start. Thanks a bunch sir.

I only suggest such a high ISO because I would really want shutter speed to stop the action of the tumbling, trapeze, juggling, etc. and my thinking is I would want a clear picture and stopped action of the subject. I would not be as concerned about the noise but maybe I should show a little more concern. Try keeping the ISO down a little if you can. See how it works because you can always crank it up if you need to. Your "quick test shots" will tell the story. Have a wonderful time.

And I realized my mistake about flash after I posted LOL. I read your message but my brain wasn't totally awake yet and I was redundant. Sorry.

By the way, I love your pictures on your web site. People don't think I look the type either and when I try to take landscapes, I have gotten some evil looks of people near by. LOL Guess they think I am trying to photograph them.

No problem, I understand the time difference. I will try what you suggested, of course.

I now have a great story to tell. After getting this advice, I went ahead and adjusted the settings on the camera, then put the battery in the charger. Mind you, I normally put a spare in the camera, but I was side tracked by a kiss from my beautiful bride. About 15 minutes after, I left my house to go pick my granddaughter up from her Grammy's (my first wife). Oops, I forgot the camera, turned around, picked it up and on my way again. I arrived just fine, said hello to all of my ex in-laws, picked up my granddaugther and off to the circus we went. We got there, picked our seats, got our popcorn and a drink then the show started. I then took off the lens cap, turned the camera on, and guess what I forgot . . .

Don't expect the Shiner's circus to have the amount
of lighting as Ringling. For single acts there will be
follow spots so if you have a good telefoto lens you
should be some nice shots. As for the over all
arena floor, that will be 'iffy'. Besides, there will
be no big colorful production numbers at the Shiner's
circus anyway so you won't miss anything.
Good luck and enjoy your evening.

I feel your pain - went to my folk's this weekend, and on the way spotted a red-tail hawk so big and sassy I thought it was an owl at first. Stopped the car, whipped out the camera, lens cap off . . . . pushed the power button . . .. pushed the power button . . . . said a naughty word - hawk just smirked. . . .
