"I believe the youth of today lack the common sense we had at the same age,"
Things are not like they used to be. Of course, they never actually were. It is amazing how we see things years later as if we knew then what we know now. We have special filters for when we point our memory-cameras.
A tragic story but certainly not “Darwin” worthy nor can the parents be blamed. 13 year old boys often do stupid things…they don’t think things through. Fortunately most of us can look back and say “what the hell were we thinking😳”
the last part of the human brain to develop is judgement, and it's usually in the mid twenties. And, kids make lots of stupid choices up to that point. Maybe, it was done by design, and one that helps us learn from our mistakes? Unfortunately, like here, some mistakes you don't recover from, and that's sad. What else is sad??....your damn insensitive title!
This is a tragedy for the family and I think bringing up the Darwin award is really insensitive. There is a difference between ignorance and stupidity. Ignorance in this situation is not being aware of the danger in digging in sand particularly since it was working. Stupidity is not fearing dangerous situations in the first place. I think that those who brought up their own "stupid" experiences of youth will agree, it was ignorance not stupidity.
I would reserve Darwin Awards for those that can at least shave (male or female). This was a kid who was struck with wanderlust and probably had no idea the sand wall he was digging into would break loose and fall in. As for today versus yesteryear... I tell people all the time "We are still living in the old west. The only thing that has changed is technology."
Having been a firefighter, EMT, Paramedic for years I have had the unfortunate task of running many calls similar to this. Many worse. In my 44 years in emergency services have seen too much loss of life due to poor choices. The majority of those choices made while under the influence of something.
R.I.P. kid!
Darwin Awards are not for kids. Their minds are too immature to make sound decisions. There are enough adult idiots to fill these spots for years to come. Remember when you were young and may have came close yourself.

Posting pictures of the hole online?
Yeah, that's a shame. It's one thing to dig in the sand, but when you get down to ten feet...
A younger boy was digging a tunnel in the sand, with the same result. Similar tragedies have happened with snot tunnels. Whoops! That should have been "snow tunnels."
I just remembered making tunnels when I was a kid, but I seem to recall having wooden sides and a roof - or maybe it was just a dream.
I just saw this headline.
"Beachgoers, be careful! Rescuers warn of large, dug-out beach holes along Outer Banks"
