Awful tragedy. Just as awful as anyone doing anything deserving such an award. Eating Tide Pods, snorting cinnamon, playing Russian roulette, not getting vaccinated against anything there is a vaccine for, driving 100 MPH drunk in a 25 MPH school zone...

Every human alive has the ability to do something that stupid. Most of us have gotten away with it at least a few times. But there's always that chance that this time, you'll go too far...

That is the key question.

Not altogether a parent thing. As a kid I dug plenty of holes and a tunnel is just a natural progression. Tunnels and Caves and adventurous minds, gonna happen. Great Escape movies on TV etc probably encouraged us, and there were close calls in the community and there were also tragedies just like this. So sad. and yet we complain about cotton wool treatment of kids today. Sympathies to the family, and kids friends.

The saddest thing was that the child was only 13.
Who could predict the potential this young person may have had personally and could have shared with others?
I'm also saddened by the title of this post, "Nomination for Darwin Award".
At 75 years of age, I am reminded of my Many poor choices, some of which came with really harsh consequences . . . .
Finally, I am sorry if I offend Anyone.

I believe the youth of today lack the common sense we had at the same age, sure we did stupid things, but we did question the safety is what we did and either didn't continue or changed directions. and we knew and accepted the consequences of our actions more or less. One question that I would ask myself is this worth what's gonna happen when I get home? I knew Dads punishment made the laws look like a cakewalk.
I remember one time three of us rode our Bicycles down to the Mississippi River front, where we found a huge sand pile ( a sand plant) no fences!! we talked about climbing to the top, 50-70 ft. then ask what if it caves in ?, the climbing idea didn't seem so hot, so we sat down and watched the Tow traffic, there was a lot in those days.
Era: 1948-49
Now Jimmy would have been a nominee for the award, fill a 6oz coke bottle with about 1/2 full of firecracker powder made a fuse by twisting the extracted fuses together and pack the neck of the bottle with cotton.
Now most would have taken this "IED" outside to the vacant lot to detonate it, But Not Jimmy he sat it on his mothers sewing machine by the front window and lit the fuse, now he did run to the next room of the flat, when the thing went off it destroyed the machine and blew the window frame and all out into the street.Jimmy had percent hearing loss in one ear, they had to replaster the whole room. Luckily no one was killed or seriously injured.
Jimmy's punishment, NONE, his mother said boys will be boys. If I had done something like that I wouldn't writing this story.

I agree with others who see this as tragic. I have said many times that I am lucky to have survived my youth in one piece. Some of the things I did were beyond stupid. At that age you don't always think about possible consequences. I was lucky. This poor kid wasn't.

If the individual in this tragedy had been an adult, then the title of the post would be appropriate. Kids donโ€™t have the life experience or knowledge to guide them in their attempts at creating adventure.

I have trouble understanding how someone could describe this tragedy as a "Nomination for Darwin Award".

I believe you are a sociopath Shoe.

Similar situation in New Jersey over the week-end when two teens dug a 10 foot hole in the sand. The sand collapsed, burying the two. They got one out but the other didn't make it.

Kids have been doing things like this...forever.

Heck, when I was a kid, we were making bombs...

Not a Darwin Award recipient...just a 13 year old...being 13.
