I have to agree with Mongoose. I have a D500 and a D7200 and these 2 cameras are all I will ever need. Very happy with both.

Recent sales on eBay below, but I would like to know the shutter count. When someone buys a D850, it's not to take shots of the grandkids occasionally.

In reality not everyone can afford the new technology. The new lenses will cost you a kidney. I rather guide some one with super great deals in the so call old technology. The D750 can be purchase with a lens with less than $1,500 almost new. You can not get a z camera equal to the 750 with a lens for that price. Also the Z lenses will be on back order for a while until things start getting back to normal. The dslr will have tons of lenses at great prices.

Since price keeps entering the picture, dont over look a clean 610. The prices are much below the 750 for almost the same camera. The 610 is the "rear guard" of modern Nikon SLRs. Anything earlier is decidedly old tech, especially the sensors.

This is the only camera mentioned in some web sides. It is a great camera, but the price is a factor for many people.

I answered YOUR question with MY OPINION. Your question did not mention price. If it's too expensive for your blood, you are free to not buy it, but please stop complaining about the opinions you requested. Best of luck.

But that ducks the question at hand.

The D850 lacks the faster frame rates of the D500. The D500 can shoot at 10 fps; the D850 at 7 fps (boosted to 9 fps when paired with the optional MB-D18 battery grip and EN-EL18a/b battery). If you are an action shooter, 10 fps is a huge advantage over 7 fps. That is why I own both cameras as one will not "do it all."

The only thing that I am an expert at is procrastination, so this is only an opinion, which is that with today's camera technology, is to invest in quality lenses. Today's cameras are akin to not much more than microprocessors with a light sensor sending them a signal focused on the sensor by the lens. The best camera will always be reduced to the lowest quality lens put on it.

From my cold dead hands... My D850 has never let me down. I added the grip + EN-EL18c battery and CFExpress Card. That increased the FPS and seemed to improve focus response. Also reduced buffering issue.

Agree that is not a speed monster for sports but it still gets the job done. I like being able to crop when needed. The 45MP allows for that.

You don't say what your main interests are, what your budget is or what your lens legacy is but I can offer a few suggestions for you to consider. Before I decided to opt for mirrorless and full frame I very nearly settled for a D7200. For landscape and portrait photography it has a lot going for it and it can be had for well below $1000.

I see that a D4s can be had second hand for less than $1000. It's a pro grade camera with image quality and AF performance that was leading edge at the time of its release. Most people don't realise it but 16MP is more than enough for their needs.

Further to one of your earlier comments, I bought a Z5 with a 24-70 f/4 lens for ~£1500. I believe it has the same sensor as the D750.

IMHO, the absolute best Nikon dslr is unequivocally the D850, especially at its current sale price. Take it from a pro Nikon shooter who has had them all. For any purpose, other than sports action, I highly recommend it. Best of luck.

Exactly right. And, for what it's worth, the D850 isn't that bad for action. It's certainly a lot better than some of the low end cameras that are poor in low light.

When my D5 was in the shop for repair I used the D850 for sports and although it is not a D5, it performed fairly well.

I am firmly in the D500 and D850 camp. Depending on needs, interests and $$$, both are great cameras. (I understand the D500 is no longer in production.) I like the combo because batteries and cards are interchangeable. I use the D500 more for action shots. I use the D850 when I'm trying to improve on the D500 shot.

Check out the Nikon D500. It is superb for focus. I actually have a D750, and yes, it is a very nice camera. If I had to make a choice again it would be for the D500. Chg-Canon doesn't like Nikon and always leaves the feeling that he thinks nothing is as good as Canon.

for light-weight, versatility, and reasonable price, the D750 is hard to beat. I chose mine and would choose it again because, among many other things, it has a built-in flash, which nearly all of the others do not! Don't always need it, but when I do, it's THERE!

CHG_Canon is very knowledgeable and magnanimous, he even recommends the D750 in his post on this topic, and has spoken highly of it in other posts.

He might be knowledgeable, but he has left a bad taste with a lot of Hoggers. Sometimes he seems like a Dr that has a bad beside manner. A lot of folks find that annoying.
