The production of DSLR's is probably over; but if I owned an 850, I think I would be set for life.

The current sale runs through May 29th. I'm thinking seriously about whether to buy a second D850.

By the way...the D780 and all of the Z cameras are on sale also. Some pretty good deals, some anemic ones. So it's not just dumping the D850.

In one sense I can think of, a good reason for buying a DSLR before they go away is compatibility with older lenses. Many people own and use them. Even with the adapter, the screw drive lenses will not autofocus on the mirrorless cameras. The D850 will be the last and greatest of Nikon's DSLR lineup, and if you don't need 45MP, the D780 is a better camera if you want decent video.

Right. And I can see the secondhand market for those old lenses weakening over the years.

I’m not sure about that - I think that Nikon has one last DSLR upcoming. A “D7” - Basically a 45mp D6 with a reduced ISO range (equivalent to the Z9’s). But that’s just an opinion.

Which one? I know you're a fan of the D780.

What you're talking about would be a flagship DSLR that would cost much more than an upgrade to the D850. Where are you getting your information from?

Yes it would be a pro camera - with a pro price tag. Based on what I know of the D859/Z7/Z9 sensors they all use the same fabrication process and well sizes. There is some discussion in the fab business of tooling for a D850 type sensor with Z9 features.

The other rumored possibility is a FtoZ adapter with full support for screw drive AF and MF Ai lenses (meter coupling). In particular, support for all the specialized scientific lenses that are only available in F mount.

Based on what Nikon has said in the commercial/industrial space I don’t think they’ll leave the F mount scientific photography users high and dry.

An adaptor with these specifications would be welcome. Had one existed already, I might have gone mirrorless and kept using lenses that I already own that won't work properly on their mirrorless cameras.

Time will tell what they're going to do, but with the release of the Z9, I don't see much incentive for anyone to buy a "D7" if it ever comes out. Just my opinion. Also keep in mind that there have been strong rumors of a replacement for the D850 starting about 2 years ago, something that never materialized. Only Nikon knows what they're going to do. I'm sure everything mentioned by you has been looked at by them, and I'm sure that they came up with a prototype for a D850 replacement. What they actually produce is up to them, and it will be based on economics.

There won't be one. They are busy making the Z9. They can't make enough of the Z9.

>At this time, I won't be making the switch.

I'm in a different place than most of you - I'm 91. And I won't be switching to anything. I doubt if I will ever buy anything else photographic. What I have suits my needs and since I have so few years left, it would be foolish to spend $$ to switch to anything. I'm just being realistic as opposed to pessimistic. I came to grips with my life expectancy some years ago so now I relive the past more than I look forward to a future that none can see. [Although in my case, there's probably not a helluva lot TO see. <g>] Harry

Funny - I recently turned 78, and I'm thinking the same thing. Should I spend $3,000 for a "toy" that I'll hardly be able to use? Now I'm buying inexpensive things that I "need."

$2500 if you hurry and buy the D850 on sale.
