There will never be any better DSLRs other than those you can still buy today.

The D850 is a great camera, but Nikon wants sales and profit. The discount could be a "gift" to users, or it could be an effort to move an item that isn't moving. "Speculate" is the right word.

I personally "speculate" that they're selling down their inventory.

$2,500 from Crutchfield, but they're sold out. $2,200 from Abes of Maine.

They're sold out at Adorama ($2,000), but Walmart has them for $2,335. Walmart buyers give it three out of five stars.

Amazon and others have them available for $2,500. I'm resisting.

Current sale price for the D850 on Nikon USA's web site is $2499.95. Authorized Nikon dealers will match that price, assuming they have inventory. Any deviation from that price is going to be for a gray market camera. Walmart sells gray market cameras. Abes of Maine sells gray market cameras. Even authorized Nikon dealers sometimes sell gray market cameras and label them as international models. This sale is the deal of the century if you want one of these cameras new (my opinion). This screenshot was taken just now.

It's not the deal of the century. Nikon has sold the D850 for that price before off and on. This is not the first time they sell it for that price.

It's a damn good deal anyway. They've had this price in place for 11 days now, and it is out of stock at some places. I don't know how long they're going to keep this camera in production, but it seems that they're dumping inventory, and it's a good deal if you act fast. It's an incredible camera if you ignore video and don't need super high frame rates.

I think they stopped production already.

I don't see any official announcement like they made with the D500, but I'd be surprised if one doesn't come soon. They're betting the bank on their mirrorless cameras and lenses, and that requires a lot of resources.

I don't think they would announce it. They simply wait until they sold out to announce it.

"There will never be a better DSLR than those you can still buy today." I agree with Paul. Although I have never used a D850 or a D500 I know both cameras perform very well.
I know that mirrorless is not for everyone but it seems to be the future. Those cameras tend to be small and those with big hands have issues with them. It is also a fact that many people have issues with dSLR cameras because of their size and weight.

If you want to buy the camera just remember we live only once. It has a very good discount and because it was made in 2017 actually means nothing. It is still a very capable tool from what I know. I am still using a 2010, D7000 and will continue to use it till she dies or I die.
If the camera you want has the features you need in your photography and you have the budget I do not see why not buying. We do not have to buy new cameras just because they have better technologies IF we are not going to use those new technologies. When I buy I buy what I need and new technologies are not necessarily my driving factor.

It's discounted $500 this Mother's day sale, and no other product in their lineup is discounted as much this time around. I know that no one except Nikon knows the truth about this, but it seems not out of the realm of possibility that they're dumping their inventory in advance of discontinuing the camera. It's a fine camera and probably worth the sale price, but it's stuck in 2017.

Still a great very capable camera. With the Z7II the EVF lacks for continuous high shooting. If they come out with a camera to replace the D850, it will probably be discontinued. By law, Nikon only has to service (supply parts) it for 7 years after the last date of sale. If you purchase one, you will probably be good for around 8-10 years at least.

Speculation is that it will be discontinued without a DSLR replacement.

As with all great technology, the D850 and all DSLR's have their era, before being eclipsed or just ended by the next "thing". In a few years, I will consider mirrorless cameras, and in a few more, electric cars....

In one sense I can think of, a good reason for buying a DSLR before they go away is compatibility with older lenses. Many people own and use them. Even with the adapter, the screw drive lenses will not autofocus on the mirrorless cameras. The D850 will be the last and greatest of Nikon's DSLR lineup, and if you don't need 45MP, the D780 is a better camera if you want decent video.
