Nikon is clearly moving into the mirrorless space. I bought my copy about 18 months ago, the first time it had ever gone on sale. I would say the D500 would probably go on sale as well, but it has already been dis-continued. Again, to the march of the mirrorless.
At this time, I won't be making the switch. I'm happy with my dream combo of the D850 and D500. And they are paid for.

It's not the first time. I bought mine about a year ago at this "sale" price.

.. poor provision for manual focus on modern autofocus lenses

I only have three lenses that require switching between auto and manual focusing. They are my oldest (20+ years) Nikkor "AF" lenses. Not really modern.

Modern lenses, when optimized for autofocus, have very short throws of the focus ring at the long end of the distance scale. Tiny movements of the focus ring make large changes in the focus distance. Additionally, the focus rings tend to be very narrow and generally do not have anything like a smooth focus motion. None of this is a problem when using autofocus, but it physically makes precise autofocus at distances beyond 5 feet or so more difficult than it needs to be on almost all lenses.

Just a quick note. I own every Nikon since the original F1 given to me in 1969 , while in Nam, by a friend of mine. I still have it. The F2, FM2, D3&D850 will always be with me. I currently own the Z9 and Fuji GFX 100s. Both are excellent for what they do. The D850 will perform excellently for stills. The Z9 will surpass any camera for video. Either are better than Sony or Canon. Stay with the best, Nikon.

MPB has 30 D850's for sale. Some with very few shutter counts. The price bumped up $150 over the past day or two but still less than on sale from B and H.

There is something strange. B&H sells the open box one for more than the new one.

That’s because the open box is a different SKU. When they put the sale price in they only do it for the SKU’s of the regular new inventory. I often see stuff like this when someone is having a good sale.

I own a D850. I don't believe that there is any camera in their lineup that is better for landscapes and family related photos. The IQ is stunning. On the other hand, if your goal is BIF or other action photos, the faster frame rates of their mirrorless cameras (especially the Z9) offer some advantages. Also, the D850 is woefully inadequate for video. Unless you use fixed focus, it continuously hunts when following moving subjects. The contrast detection focus with the mirror up just sucks. The fact that you can't use a viewfinder when taking video means holding the camera away from your body to see the scene you're filming, and I have found this to be less stable than using a camera or camcorder with a viewfinder that is held to your face with your arms braced against your body. This is what being stuck in 2017 means.

I would argue that my Z7 is better for landscapes. It has IQ equal to the D850 and a couple of advantages. With IBIS I can handhold shots I would need a tripod for with the D850 and if I am on a tripod I can use ND filters and as long as I’m 30 seconds or under I can see the exposure through the viewfinder. No need to calculate. If I had the Z7II I would be able to do that with shutter speeds up to 15 minutes.

That is true so it's the time to buy the DSLR.

Yeah, buy the DSLR and you’ll always know you have the best DSLR. If you buy the best mirrorless, even if it’s better than the best DSLR, eventually a better one will come along and you won’t have the best anymore.

50 years ago (well, 47 years ago), I shot video for our HS basketball coaches using Sony reel to reel monochrome equipment. Shot from the top of the stands. Manual focus. Don't remember it ever being a problem. The coaches loved it. My brother-in-law was the producer and (usually) the director for his church's video team. They used three broadcast cameras. Focus was manual, using controls mounted on the handle of the tripod (industry standard method).

I agree that the lack of reasonably priced parfocal lenses and the poor provision for manual focus on modern autofocus lenses is not ideal for shooting video. That's why I say that if video is important, the best solution is to buy a video camera. Stop blaming it on the camera after cheaping out and buying incorrect equipment. Or at least stop whining.

Or go mirrorless and get great video and great stills.

I wouldn’t say it’s the lenses. DSLR’s were never designed for manual focus. They don’t have the focus aids like split screens and microprisms that were commonly found on film cameras. Focusing manually is another advantage of mirrorless cameras. They generally offer things like focus peaking and focus magnification. And because you can see the exposure you can see to focus dark scenes much better.

Many people buy many cameras that they never needed or should have bought in the first place. Usually because they lack the basic understanding and commitment to learn how to use them. It's actually good to get those cameras out of their hands and into the hands of someone who will make better use of them.

I looooove that. I depend on such people.

I reread my answer, and there is an error. The last sentence should have read that it makes manual focus harder than it needs to be.

That's OK. When I read "all", or 'everybody', or 'most people', I mentally replace it with 'some'.
