When I bought by D850 about 18 months ago, I was betting the rumored successor was never going to make it top production.
I'm in the same boat as far as no plans to migrate equipment to the mirrorless. As to equipment, I just had my first KEH transaction for a F-mount lens - and it was great. I have no fear of not being able to cure any GAS attack.

Having waited for a very long time with no estimated availability, until recently, the Nikon TC14E III teleconverter is back in stock. Today notification was received that the Nikon 105mm f2.8G ED IF AF S has been discontinued.
Also noted at $2496.95, there is a savings of $500 on the Nikon D850.
This makes me wonder if Nikon is slowly disbanding its DSLR line in favor of mirrorless.
At 73 other than a few lenses, I see no need to convert to mirrorless. What is the future of the DSLR? Is it worth buying new glass for my D750 and D810? Would anyone care to comment? I do not wish this to become a pandoras box debate of mirrorless versus DSLR, but wonder what others think Thank you.

Check B&H's site. They have a grey market one available with a 1 year warranty from them. Should be enough time to determine it's worthiness if you are into grey market. They also have used ones for sale that can save you a few dollars.

I was anticipating the purchase of a D850 to add to my D810 and D750. The D750 should be going for a noisey shutter repair soon. In retrospect, investing in new glass might be a better option. It is doubtful at my age that a switch to mirrorless will happen. Yes, perhaps I should check availability at other retailers. Maybe someone has one on a shelf somewhere. I prefer to buy new rather than used...just overly cautious. Thank you both for a response.

From personal experience, the difference in IQ between the D810 and D850 is negligible. Unless you need some feature that the D850 has over the D810, go for the glass.

Exactly luvmypets... Likewise my Nikon D3x was a refurb... And it still is paying the bills over a decade later...
In fact all four of my Nikon "Pro" level bodies are Refurbs from Nikon USA.

My clients have zero concern about my "Kit" they only care about my deliverables... Word!

You prove the point that we don't need the latest equipment to get great shots!

Of course you realize that for us silly old hobbyists buying stuff we don't need is part of the fun.

Right on Bill, in both cases...

Eventually, every lens ever made will be discontinued. Some after only a few years.

I would check Nikon's website on this question. A couple of previous cases have occurred and been reported here in which one or another retailer reported an item as discontinued which turned out not to have been.

This lens has been a very popular member of Nikon's lineup for a number of years. Development and tooling costs have been long-since amortized. My first guess is that if they were planning to discontinue lenses, they would most likely start with one other than this one.

Wherever did you get the idea that a large expensive slow fixed FL short tele is "very popular" ? Perhaps on UHH ?

Follow-up info after the original post indicates that this is the macro lens...and f/2.8 isn't slow for a telephoto...

That is exactly the thing I was referring to. Hard to imagine that an expensive slow large fixed FL short tele is "very popular" in the real world (outside uhh). I know exactly what it is, cuz I have one.

I do too. For 15 years. One of the first "extra" lenses I ever bought for my digital cameras. Price was reasonable then. I still love it. For all kinds if things. It's just like the third options in "Goldilocks." No problem for me if it is discontinued, though. One is sufficient.

They are all easily covered with mirrorless cameras. The future seems to be mirrorless. If you are satisfied with your present dSLR bodies and lenses why switch? Those cameras and lenses could easily outlive you if properly taken care of.
Many photographers have switched to mirrorless already but it does not mean dSLR bodies and lenses are obsolete. Many but many other photographers use them and will continue to do so.

As I said, if your present cameras are doing the job no reason to go mirrorless.

A box is a box some are more fancy. Only have to make sure of the shutter count isn't excessive.

My view is that until and unless I feel I’m being held back by my equipment (and I’m nowhere close to that point) or if my camera fails, there is no reason for me to move to any upgrades.
