Is anyone going to rush out and buy the Nikkor Z 800mm lens?

I shoot exclusively wildlife in Florida Wetlands, the most I have ever needed was my 600 f4 Sony, which weighs just about what the Nikon 800 weighs. For me the 600 just has too much reach, maybe not for others.
I can easily hold my 600 and I am 72. It is center weighted and is very easy to hand hold, not all day, but long enough for me to track birds in flight as they fly by. And sometimes, depending where I am, the 600 has too much reach and I have to put my Sony 200-600 on the a9.
Now, the 800 is at an affordable price for me, it is better than half what I paid for my Sony 600.
To be honest, if Nikon brought out a 600 5.6 FL, I would rush out to be first in line and I would also buy the Nikon Z9, until then, my Sony 200-600 and 600 f4 will be used on a daily basis.

I paid $5,900.00 for my Sigma 800mm F:5.6 AF in 2002. I still have it and use it. I do not hand hold anything so I use a $30.00 baby buggy to move both big lenses around.

For the price of the Canon 800/5.6 lens plus another $500 you can have the new Nikon Z800/6.3 PF lens AND two brand new Z9 cameras!
For all the wildlife photographers out there this is pretty spectacular. If only Nikon could get its production accelerated to meet the demand.

I guess i need to apologize, I really didn't think that many would actually spend that much money on a single lens. I would be interested to see how often this lens is sold and used. Most of the sources that I used prior to my safari suggested renting such a lens rather than purchasing. I guess there are those who would use it enough to warrant purchase.

...certainly not "rich" by any means, but this activity has paid for a few products over the years. That said, gear is all bar money to me; over the 31 years I've been off the sauce I think I've saved some bux...oh, and I don't even do the Lotto. ;0)

I would consider purchasing this lens someday. Currently use a 300mm f2.8 + 2x TC for a 600mm f5.6. Sometimes 600 mm is not enough reach for bird photography and it would be nice to add a 500-800mm lens (+/- TC) to the collection.

Like some UHH members pointed out, people will pay for their hobbies, and save on everything else, which is what I do. Once the kids finish college, the house is paid off and I have time (ie retirement), I would definitely consider this lens - it’s an excellent price point, and I’ll probably get a used one by that time.

If I wasn’t that obsessed with photography/videography, and I was only going on a safari, then I would rent the lens. Overall, it’s cheaper purchase than many sports cars, motorcycles, boats, traveling, drinking, smoking, etc...

If I had a “need” for it I would get on the NPS pre order list.

I learned my lesson with the Z9 release. Waited until I saw it had wide ranging good reviews to get in line. Still waiting for my 11/14 order to be filled. I was checking mail at midnight the other night when the mailbox blew up with all the 800pf release notices - including Steve Perrys first video. I pre ordered within minutes from 4 different vendors including Nikon US. I should get one fairly early.
Likely may still not have a damn Z9 to use it with.......
I started to reenlist in NPS and thought better of it, tried all the tricks with Best Buy etc but have not lucked out yet. As the weather gets better I hope one shows up.

Curious why you didn’t proceed with NPS? I got some of the first Z9’s and other first release products.
Also 20% discount on repairs.
Free first sensor cleaning of Z9.

A bit of apathy. Seems like I did not get much return on the programs before. Didn't think order fulfillment would become a driving issue. Very infrequently need repairs- every 3 years maybe. Cleaning sensors is something I started to do to not have the down time/shipping back and forth.

Thank you for your explanation.
Guess it makes sense for you.
I have been an NPS member for many years, back when it was free if you qualified with your equipment inventory.
The camera store I use got their first shipment of Z9's on the scheduled delivery date and mine was included.
Since I have several lenses that need repaired I paid for the membership this year. Already paid for it getting a 14-24mm lens repaired.
Good shooting!
