Is anyone going to rush out and buy the Nikkor Z 800mm lens?
Only billionaires, or people able to write it off as a business expense.
Not a billionaire nor a professional but have some funds to spend (which I would have normally spent on trips). So ordered one. I have always wanted an 800mm lens (rented the 800mm f/5.6 twice, once for Yellowstone and once for the local peregrine falcons nesting on a cliff over the water). This is less than half the cost and half the weight! Will find lots of uses for it.
Just posted on Nikon Rumors:
"Amazon has already closed its pre-order option in the US. I strongly encourage readers to pre-order the new lens asap even if you are not sure you want this lens – you can always cancel later. The wait time for this lens will be very, very long – probably more than 12 months.

Not really. For some reason a number of folks on UHH don't realize the amount of money normal people, with middle class incomes, spend on hobbies. Boaters spend a lot of money on something they can only use a fraction of the year (depending on local). In my neighborhood folks have motorhomes they use a few weeks a year. These are people who wash their own cars, cut their own lawns and save money where they can, just they can afford to enjoy their hobbies, while they are young enough for the family to enjoy them.

Exactly! Some of my neighbors buy new cars like Teslas (or other fancy cars) for $$$ while I drive my Subaru into the ground. Or go out to fancy dinners with expensive wine. Or have a horse or fancy golf clubs, etc. It is all relative. Hobbies are for fun, there is no way to justify the cost of the camera gear based on a single picture. It is just something one enjoys doing.

Absolutely ! A pair for stereo. And acoarst Im having a stereo bracket custom made by RRS.
I wonder why the mirrorless is so expensive. None of Canon's long EF lenses cost nearly that much new.
Well it is much, much cheaper than the Sony 800mm lens!
I responded to Jim who specified EF lenses.

Oops, sorry. Still think he was joking but maybe I am wrong about that too.

The Canon is 2x the price of the Nikon. The extra $6500 does get you an extra half stop. Beats me where you get your pricing info. I use BH. You might wanna do the same ?

Great business move for Nikon releasing it at that price point. Hopefully , they will have no problems getting them out.
