I contacted my cable co. To call me, you have to press 8 to connect. Robots don't know how to press 8!
It cost me $2.50 per month. It saved my sanity.

If that becomes popular, the robots will find a way to press 8. After all, it's just a two-tone signal that they can generate easily. And AI can recognize which number they want pressed.

But your cable company will still charge you that $2.50/month.

I was just talking to someone today who has a hybrid car. (Make & model unknown.) He asks the caller if they cover replacing his car's battery. They are happy until they find out the replacement cost is half the price of the car! 😁 Click! (Dunno the "trueness" of the tale, but just figgered I'd share.)

I have the google scanning service. It doesn't cut down on the number of incoming calls. It just replies for me if I hit the scanning button. If they hang up, it was a scam. If I end up with a voice mail, it was legit and I call them back. That happens about one in fifty times. Mostly, I block about 8 or nine numbers a day. It's not perfect but I usually don't have to engage a salesperson. It's free...came with the phone.

I'd estimate that more than 80% of the line phone calls we get no one leaves a message. My wife says 60-80% of those do leave a message are spam, so maybe 1 in 10 is someone of interest.

Recently seen a big increase in email crap also. One I get everyday is for our mortgage, we have none. They seem to randomly change the name of the sender so blocking dies not work.

The businesses that do telemarketing calls generally have a large range of phone numbers so even calls from the same guy don't always come from the same number. And since they can spoof numbers on your display, that might also affect the blocking.

My phone has a lot of different ring tones. One is for my wife. One is for everyone on my contact list. And a third one is the default ring tone for everyone else. I don't answer the third ring tone. If it's important they will leave a message. If they leave a message, then I can judge whether to put them in the contact list or not. (Before I was able to block numbers, I had a ring tone for spam, which was the opening of the ballet "The Miraculous Mandarin" by Bela Bartok. It's a highly disagreeable noise representing city life).

Why not set up your cell phone to accept calls only if they are in your contact list?

Doesn't work if you have a business and it is a new customer / client on a first call.

Something to be learned,
If the Fed Gov cared a centila about the people they would send out a hit squad and the problem would be resolved.

Very true, I still consult.
Besides, did the cartoon I posted appear to be a phone call.
A demented variation of 'FaceTime", maybe!
