My, Oh my, do I love my coffee. I use a "reusable" Keurig K-cup and I drink McCoffee which is about $8.00 for a large container at Walmart. It provides me with the convenience of a single cup of coffee without the high cost of K-cups and the impact on global pollution.

"Keurig produced 9.8 billion non-biodegradable K-Cups in 2015, each taking up to 500 years to break down. Put end-to-end, theyโ€™d circle the globe around 10.5 times! Thatโ€™s a lot of waste. Some cities around the world, like Hamburg, Germany, have even banned the use of these machines in state buildings due to their negative environmental impact.

Each K-Cup is also considerably more expensive than simply using traditional coffee grounds. Your basic Folgerโ€™s brand K-Cup will cost around $50 a pound. Even high-end traditionally packaged beans averages at around $15-20 a pound, and Dunkin Donuts Original Blend will set you back $8.99 a pound."

The K-cup is recyclable, you have to take the time to remove the grounds before putting into the recyclable bin. The price of recyclable plastic is slowly coming up but is nowhere near the price for aluminum.

Smile. The low part was to keep my cholesterol down (heart disease), not to cut calories.

I didn't begin drinking coffee till I was in my fifties, and it took me a while to figure out that I liked it black. I could never get the milk and sugar proportions right. I tried all different kinds of "good" coffee, and I finally settled on old fashioned Maxwell House. I tried "top rated" coffees, but I couldn't see the appeal, especially considering the premium price. I was disappointed that I didn't like the Kona coffee samples they gave us when we went to Hawaii. Just as well, I guess. I've gotten variety packs of K-cups, but none of the flavors appealed to me.

In a documentary about coffee a few years ago, it said that America was given was what was basically the dregs in terms of coffee quality. When I see small bags of coffee selling for $10, I'm glad I like my Maxwell House.

How about instant? That was all my parents drank, but I've never tried it. As for Starbucks, I'd have to take their language course before I ordered there. Asking for a small cup of coffee would probably get me a wide-eyed stare from the clerk.

Comments are welcome.

I didn't start drinking coffee regularly until I was about that same age Jerry. Sure, I had coffee sometimes at a restaurant or coffee shop but never drank it at home. Same for tea. But when I retired at 55 I started drinking it at home. At first I drank the stuff in a can like you - I think it was Folgers. Then my girlfriend bought a Keurig machine and supplied the house with a lot of different flavors of coffee. I didn't know there was that much to know about coffee and then I watched a documentary on TV about coffee. I found out that most canned coffee had some sort of filler in it. I didn't like that idea I wanted pure coffee not something with fillers or flakes or dregs. So I bought a grinder, some coffee beans, and a pour coffee system that consisted of filters that go into a cone that sits on top of your cup. You grind the coffee as fine or course as you like, put some in a filter that is placed into a cone, and then you pour water from your kettle into the cone and let it drip into the cup. I have a pot and larger cone for when I have to make more than one cup. These are made by Melita. I've experimented with all kinds of coffee and found that I like the dark roast coffee best and that I like it strong without any fu-fu stuff added - just black please.

My family drank tea - parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles - so I started with that early, with lots of milk. It was often loose tea, so my grandmother would read the tea leaves to amuse us.

I used to drink Folgers, but the price rose too high, and I didn't taste a difference. I also tried grinding beans, and that was fun for a while, but convenience won over processing. The Keurig is very convenient, and I use refillable plastic K-cups - filled with Maxwell House.

I didn't start drinking coffee till my 40's. Spent 4 years with Uncle Sam in Libya and the to Germany during the occupation. In the field don't remember what I drank, did try it many times but never liked it. Did smoke cigars called Cuban Crucks. The ends were dipped in Rum.

Sounds like coffee has as many variables, likes and dislikes as Canon v Nikon v Sony, etc.

When I was working a Starbucks near my office was very convenient. Then I found a small espresso machine for about $60 that brews up a good latte. One 12 or 16 ounce latte with breakfast keeps me set for the day.

I tried Star Bucks once and didn't like the taste at all. Dunkin Donuts with no foreign words for me.

I have K Cup coffee maker and I like my lattes and capachinos. No muss no fuss and they usually come out just right in a couple of minutes.

Not a big fan of Starbucks. On the plus side, I find it interesting how one can learn foreign languages in the strangest places.
For example, in Starbucks you can learn Italian.
'Vende' is Italian for 8 Dollars!

Chief, when I was stationed at a joint service facility at Phu Bai, RVN, the Army provided the exterior security day and night and the Navy manned the switch board in the CP. I had an opportunity to partake of Navy coffee one night while pulling guard at the CP and had no problems staying awake for the next 23 hours. With respect to the Air Force stationed with us, they took no part in station security.

There was always a 30 cup urn perking away whether at a strategic or tactical site. The NUG was tasked with ensuring it never ran dry and cleaning the grounds.

I've had 4 cups in my life, during college about 45 years ago. One cup with sugar, more and more added but never improving, because my dad drank it with sugar. One cup with milk, more and more added but never improving, because my mom drank it with milk. One cup with both sugar and milk, more and more added but never improving, thinking since I'm their kid maybe I had to combine both. And one cup black, thinking maybe they cancelled each other out so I was meant to drink black. Horrible, each way. Tea was no better. Haven't had either since.
