Triple, the outer edge helps the black in the photo blend against the other shades better

Triple mat - and that's a beautiful image!

The triple matt does a much better job of showing your print to its best advantage.

I'd vote for the double hands down.. The black frame takes too much of my attention away from the wonderful photo in the triple frame.

The first photo is much cleaner to me. The heavy black border in the second overwhelms the photo. It’s the first thing I see, when the first thing should be the image.

I would prefer the triple because our eyes are more drawn to white than to black. The black frame demands that our eyes move to the whites within the frame. Not so with the double, where our eyes can rest on the white border.

I have a show coming up in April at the Spark Photo Festival in Peterborough Ontario Canada and due to some massive house repairs I can't afford to properly frame my prints. Being a digital specialist I figured to do it all digitally and use a peel and stick substrate. I have 2 choices and ask your opinion on which one strikes you as more presentable. Of course the double mat would save me a pile of black ink considering that the entire show is in B/W but the triple just seems to pop. I have 34 prints to do and many are panoramas so that black ink just may become an issue. But certainly not as much as framing would be. Thanks for your help.

Go with your gut. I don't see a lot of difference. That would be a lot of ink for the second one...

I am old school, and the double mat allows the image to stand out on it's own - simple and un-complicated - so, DOUBLE
.

#2 looks the same only with a black frame. That's why they both look superb. Because both outcomes are excellent.

So my thought would be to go the simpler way with just the double mat, which is perfect by the way and not at all easy to do, and let that shine. Let people pick the framing that suits them. Give them that option. Good stuff.

I would go for the double mat, sometimes a simplistic answer is the best, also you are not dragged to the heavy outer edge, and concentrate on the subject matter. Small world, I'm from Peterborough also, not entering the contest though.

I would go with the triple for that shot but not seeing the rest of your shots don't take that as a universal suggestion. I would make one double mat and one triple, then cut out the center and set the two frames over each shot to help you decide which way to go with each individual photo.
