This one might be more appealing to members here. Placed violin & bow on the floor, camera above, soft box aimed at ceiling for a bounce flash minimizing shine.

Jim, I really like this!!! Compositionally, I think is great and I love the lighting.

I don't know if you have to option to fix the cloth and reshoot or could you move the violin and bow off the floor away from the cloth with some sort of support underneath? Your EXIF wasn't available so I don't know what lens and settings you used but if you can't move the violin and bow could you open the lens to blur the wrinkles? Could you use a longer lens to help blur them?

In post would you be able to tone down the 3 silver pieces and white dot on the bow just a little? A photography instructor I had would point out that the bow string needs a little separation from the point on the lower curve. It doesn't bother me but it's something that I learned to look for in my photos so I also check when I view other peoples' photos.

I think with a little tweaking it's a wall hanger.

Very, very nice!!

Beautifully done. The first thing that caught my eye when I looked at the picture was the out of focus chin rest. Looking closer I realized that it was caused by shadow not focus. I would not have even noticed the wrinkled cloth if Jim hadn't mentioned it. The wrinkles extend from the top of the violin and IMHO adds a flow(?) to the picture.

I'm guessing that the wrinkles were deliberate and done for effect. I don't have a problem with them but they seem to be a problem for others. Perhaps the wrinkles need to be evenly distributed rather than having clumps of wrinkles separated by relatively flat areas. Perhaps random clumps of wrinkles gives the impression of untidiness as opposed to something that was done deliberately for effect.

The soft lighting has achieved the objective of avoiding harsh highlights, which means that you can now add more contrast if you want. As it is, it's a bit soft contrast-wise, and with the right manipulation of contrast/brightness levels you could strengthen the image while still avoiding harsh highlights.

Agreed with R.G. also the shadow on the cheep piece. I love the soft lighting. Good job!

It's a good pic. However, it lacks the drama of the one from the other day. Not sure why that is. I do think that the bow should be from top left to bottom right rather than top right to bottom left - in the way that the bow crosses the strings when playing.
You can please some of the people some of the time.

The cloth was intentional. I'll darken it and post the results.

I shot this with my 50mm lens. I have another shot from the neck down that will be my last post. I have another picture after I removed all the wrinkles.
I too didn't like the polished tuner. It is what it is, people playing the instrument probable like to see it even if it is so bright. The white areas on the bow are a pure white. Only way to tone them down is to add some color to them. I think I'll just keep them the way they are.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Correct this on lacks drama. Adding drama can be done by applying selective lighting on different areas. When dealing with larger items we always have the focus problem. On my first picture I wanted soft lighting because the violin has this station finish to it and wanted to keep it that way. This one is better since I shot it from overhead. The 50 mm f/8 helped.

Never thought about the bow angle. Just placed it where it kind of looked good.

Ok this one is the same picture. I removed the wrinkles by adding an exposure layer, then lowering it till now wrinkles showed. I had to make a mask to make sure none of this darling would affect the violin and bow.

As usual, I'm sort of diametrically opined from everyone else. I LIKE the wrinkles. They tell me this is an actual cloth and not an applied background. To me, it makes the image more real. I really like the original. In the second, the violin seems to be floating in a sea of nothing, which is a bit disturbing to me.
