On Monday I went to Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge north of Salt Lake City. It was a poor day for raptors. In the following set, only the two shots on a "One Way" sign were taken in the refuge. All the others were taken going to and from the refuge.

I will post the eagle shots in a separate post.

N.B. If you have not reviewed Steve Perry's latest post on problems in winter shooting from lens hoods, DO IT. Half of my shots were not usable for exactly the reason that Steve pointed out.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks, Tim, I have been advised that I should not be setting the shutter speed so high to get flight shots so early in the morning. There is inadequate light.

I do that but use EC to increase the amount of light that hits the sensor taking into consideration lightness or darkness of the background. 1/3200 minimum for small birds. 1/2500 or even 1/2000 for larger, slower birds like gulls. I rarely like images over ISO 3200. My 500pF is sharpest at f 8. I cap my D500 at ISO 5000, D850 at 8000. I shake a bit at times, too. Not being too smart I use simple things to bring out items like the eyes.

Thanks for mentioning that, Mike. I was out this morning with my 100-400 and noticed heat haze and focus issues with my lens. I couldn't figure out what was going wrong. Steve's video explained it nicely.
