I do that but use EC to increase the amount of light that hits the sensor taking into consideration lightness or darkness of the background. 1/3200 minimum for small birds. 1/2500 or even 1/2000 for larger, slower birds like gulls. I rarely like images over ISO 3200. My 500pF is sharpest at f 8. I cap my D500 at ISO 5000, D850 at 8000. I shake a bit at times, too. Not being too smart I use simple things to bring out items like the eyes.
