When using a tripod, if you keep the gimbal or ball head a little loose, the VR in the 200 - 500 will compensate pretty well. I have even used it with a monopod.
Of course you would have to do your own testing.

I use a carbon fiber tripod and carbon fiber gimbal head. Each rated at aprx 55lb capacity and my heaviest body, with battery grip, two batteries + heaviest lens with tripod collar = aprx 8 1/2 lbs so I have plenty of safety margin.
The camera, lens, gimbal head and tripod come to aprx 15lbs to carry around. A monopod would save some of that - my tripod has one leg that comes off and becomes a monopod which shaves aprx 3 lbs off the weight to carry.
First, will FX lenses work with DX bodies…yes. I knew I would one day move to full frame (FX – D850) so I always invested in FX lenses. I have only one DX (18-300) and love it for by 7100.
Second, when you get your 200-500 consider changing the foot. All my tripods, monopods and gimbal use Arca Swiss. I made it work, but the correct foot is worth the investment.
Third, consider changing the lens hood. It works but is inferior when compared to its Nikon sister lens hoods (24-70 & 70-200).
Fourth, (the give-me), mount your 200-500 only with the foot not camera body. Now, from last week, when carrying the lens, hook your strap to the foot not camera. I use a Black Rapid shoulder harness to camera or L-Bracket and then for balance carry the foot in my hand. After reading UH blogs, I am making that change.
The 200-500 is sold according the title of the post. Maybe the OP got it???

Yvonne the AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR weighs in at 2524 grams... Which makes it a challenge to hand hold for longer than a few minutes... I've used it for League Soccer until I got an AF 300mm f/2.8 which increased my "keeper" rate by several fold. The AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens works well on a monopod, albeit it has a balance issue since it's a "Pumper" and it's CG (Center of Gravity) varies with Focal Length (thus it's not a good candidate for a Gimble Mount.).
I've retired my copy of this lens to Studio work where is truly shines for Beauty and Fashion Editorials...
The VR is simply amazing... I can hand hold in the Studio for some intriguing results! See Below!
btw, You might look at the AF-S 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Nikkor, it's much lighter with a more useful reach...

I use the lens on my 7500 and I’m very pleased with the results. It is an excellent lens and will work fine with your camera. It is a heavy lens and As suggested a good tripod will help. I also purchased a shoulder strap to take weight off my neck for the times I wasn’t using a tripod or monopod. I bought mine as a refurbished one directly from Nikon USA for under $1000. Check their site for deals.
Should work great. I have this lens and it is one of my favs. It is a heavy beast so monopod or tripod is a good idea. I got mine from lensauthority.com they don’t always have stock but they will notify you when they get them in. One of the best companies I’ve ever dealt with. Really amazing service! A good way to save a little money imo
I shoot it a lot with D500 it is a good lens
Only notation I'll add, is I had the mentioned lens & used it with a tripod that supported 25 pounds. The issue I had, is the hood for the lens was so long that with a steady wind over 5 mph, I had vibration. In addition, I added 10 pounds of weight to the tripod, No difference. I ended up selling the lens & purchased the 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR Lens
