Yes, my new CF reader does read XQD cards as well, but not vice versa -- which is good, because I have both XQD and CF and can switch between them in the field. Make sure when and if you buy a new reader this is clear.
Sony MRW-G1 CFexpress Type B/XQD Memory Card Reader $99.99 at B&H.

Thank you. Good to know when I buy my first CF card and reader. Thank you. Good to have one reader for both cards.

Another caution, I assume you already have an XQD/SD reader -- keep it. My new reader does not have an SD slot. You can probably get a reader that reads all of them.

Could some patient person please describe how I get the downloaded update from my computer to my camera. I am sure it is obvious to many but not to me.

Thank you.

Go to this link and read the instructions. It isn't very difficult.

https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/384.html

Download the file at the bottom of the page. Then follow the instructions given on the page. Run the file on your computer, transfer the required .bin file to a memory card that has been formatted IN THE CAMERA. It should be the same type of card as your primary card. Put the card back into the camera and continue to follow the instructions. It takes several minutes. Make sure your battery is charged.

Before you do any of this, check the firmware version on your camera. I just bought one of these cameras, and it had the latest firmware (1.2) out of the box.

Therwol, Thank you very much for your thorough and rapid response. The key element I am missing is how I connect my computer to a memory card. Do I just insert the properly formatted memory card in the same device I use to upload my pictures to the computer. I guess that makes the most sense.

Again, thank you!

That's exactly what you do. I'm just using an SD card at this point in my D850 until I get around to buying the faster card. Both of my computers have an SD slot. When I insert the SD card, the computer recognizes it as another "drive". I can transfer anything back and forth. Format the card in the camera. Insert it into the computer (with an adaptor to USB if necessary.) Transfer the required file to the card. Put it back in your camera. Finish.
