Can the Nikon D850 use a CF Express card in the XQD card slot?
Thanks for your help.

Nikon has recommended memory cards for all their cameras. Check your manual.

If the camera is an older D850, the included manual does not mention CF Express cards.

It only mentioned XQD cards in both the Nikon manual and the David Busch guide.

But the camera was purchased from B&H less than a year ago.

Read this. If you upgrade the firmware, then yes.

The responses above are correct. The download center is here:

Be aware that more significant firmware updates may also come with revisions to the user's manual or technical reference manual. Some investigating may be required on your part to determine if your existing manual is out of date. PDF versions of these manuals are also available at the above Nikon site. I like to keep copies of these manuals on the "cloud" so that they are accessible via my cell phone if needed while out. Enjoy the day.

Yes, however an additional purchase for a CFExpress reader is needed. CFExpress cards can not be read by a XQD reader...Not backwards compatable

The manual will be out of date. The CF express cards require the latest firmware update. The writing speeds Long for CF cards is 10 times faster

SLRs have been out of production for a while now. The paper manual is at least as old as the camera’s production batch, and quite possibly older, if the printing was outsourced much earlier than that.

Yes, it can take/read CFexpress cards. If the D850 is a few years old you will need to do a firmware upgrade to read the card. You will also need a card reader rated for the new card. My old Sony reader was good for XQD only. You can check whether or not your camera is updated in the Menu/Tools, last item "firmare". If it show 1.2 you are good for CFexpress, if not you will need to upgrade your firmware.
Good luck,
Michael

Does the CF reader read the XQD cards you may still have images on, or may use for backup?

Yes, my new CF reader does read XQD cards as well, but not vice versa -- which is good, because I have both XQD and CF and can switch between them in the field. Make sure when and if you buy a new reader this is clear.
Sony MRW-G1 CFexpress Type B/XQD Memory Card Reader $99.99 at B&H.
