I have learned from the birders on UHH that the best bird shots are in natural settings, such as trees. Man made objects are to be avoided. Unfortunately, Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge has NO substantial trees. It is a large marsh with ponds adjacent to the Great Salt Lake. Therefore, these perched raptors were photographed sitting or flying from their best vantage points for hunting. Obviously, they have no regard for photography.

The hawks are rough legged (I think) and the kestrels are obvious. That last shot might be a different type of bird.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

I frequently see birds perched on signs. Sometimes the combination is quite humorous. Nice set, Mike.

What would they do without signs as perches? Nice shots of a good looking species.

Wonderful series, Mike and the last photo is of a Rough legged hawk, light morph, they come in many different color schemes!! Also, they have very small beaks and talons compared to other hawks. I got several nice Rough legged hawk photos yesterday that show the variety of colors schemes...will post some later!!
