Raptors at Bear River

I have learned from the birders on UHH that the best bird shots are in natural settings, such as trees. Man made objects are to be avoided. Unfortunately, Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge has NO substantial trees. It is a large marsh with ponds adjacent to the Great Salt Lake. Therefore, these perched raptors were photographed sitting or flying from their best vantage points for hunting. Obviously, they have no regard for photography.

The hawks are rough legged (I think) and the kestrels are obvious. That last shot might be a different type of bird.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

You are very generous, Barbara, thanks. He saw me standing below him and was wondering what I had in my hands.

Mike, another Great Set from you. All are beauties. according to Merlin, the last shot is probably a Swainson's Hawk (or a Rough-legged as a 2nd choice).

you need to take shots where you have them. Last year I was driving home, and spotted a Grey Hawk on a speed limit sign. I pulled over and took some shots. That's the only time I have seen one in the wild.

Love the third Kestrel shot! I think you're right about the Rough-legged Hawk.

A fine set, Mike. I find that birds love to perch on signs telling them and us what not to do.
