As Competition Secretary for my photographic society I have regularly had problems when receiving embedded photos. It always seems to be from Mac users and is a real pain if you are using a Windows computer. Give me proper attachments every time.

As the OP I found these replies helpful and it is clear that attachments are the way to send images--if you wish them to be preserved by the addressee. I will say, however that I have several aged friends and family members who are doing well just to find their email app and to open it. They love seeing the embedded images without having to work additional PC magic to see them. Just sayin'.

The more you work an image in PS by adding layers, the bigger it gets. Also I make focus stacks and stitched panoramas. Starting with say an individual 18MB 16MP Raw file or several I can get huge finished images. Yes, the PSD files can get huge! And as stated do Save As TIFFs and JPGs.
I of course reduce their size physically and digitally for printing, sharing, and even viewing. So the really big TIFF and JPG files are only used for archiving. I occasionally re-edit image files with new techniques. For the same reason I keep all my good RAW files. I don't seem to have a problem with file storage on my HDD. I yearly remove files to external storage. Bottom line, I eventually reduce my image files to match my printer's paper size of no more than 17×13 inches.
The more you work an image in PS by adding layers,... (show quote)

I am still curious about the need for such large photo files to be emailed to others. If these are to be printed and saved by others, then you can flatten them in any program you are using to make layers. Are you sending these files to others so that they can edit them? Then using Google's Drive or Dropbox or even mailing a USB thumb drive might be a better way to go.

BTW, I do not like embedded photos in Gmail because if they are big then I need to scroll horizontally and vertically to view them. While as attachments, Google will give a preview that is scaled to fit my monitor, and I still can have the full file saved on my computer.

Just some thoughts from a user and photographer. --Richard

No magic, just double click the attachment and it opens.
Playing dumb today is stubbornness not inability.

Some people lose cognitive ability as they get older, and doing things has to be simplified for them. Some people develop a variety of vision problems as they get older and need something large in front of them to appreciate it. Read what the OP said about his relatives having trouble even finding their email app. I don't think they're playing dumb. They're not playing anything.

Yes, you are right. It's a lack of understanding of the various stages we are or will go through.
