My partner Lauretta and I went to Utah in October 2009. We spent two full days in the portion of Capital Reef NP known as Cathedral Valley. It's the most fabulous place I have ever visited. Before we left I bought her a brand new Nikon D90 and the pair of kit lenses that came with it. The photos I took with my Nikon D300 have vanished in the ether. But I came across all the images she took on an external hard drive last week. They were all jpg shots and most had never been processed. Viewing these shots was like reliving that adventure with my best friend who passed away a year and a half ago. So I post these photos for three reasons even though I took none of them. First, the quality of these images is amazingly good with a 12 MP camera and the 18x105MM kit lens. Second, Cathedral Valley is an awesome place that is difficult to access but deserves to be seen. Third, I want the world to see what a great eye for photography my late partner possessed. I hope you enjoy viewing these images as much as I enjoyed processing them.

Striking pictures all. Thanks for sharing.

I've visited Capitol Reef NP several times but never traversed Cathedral Valley. I did travel part of the road for it until my low-clearance vehicle could not safely continue. Now that I own a 4-wheel, high clearance vehicle, I may return, inspired by your partner's interesting photographs.

The National Park Service offers a good description for visiting Cathedral Valley: https://www.nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/cathedralvalley.htm

saxman71 thank you for sharing Lauretta's endearing artistry...
Such breathtaking vistas of a truly enchanting venue!

Appears that her Nikon D90 and AF 18-105 certainly was up showcasing the latent beauty within this Nation Park.
I'm truly amazed at her artistic prowess and epic command of her "tools"
Loving that first image... it is absolutely superb!

And to realize that Lauretta captured this in Manual Control speaks to her artistic eye and mastery of her lens...
EXIF Date: Manual exposure, 1/250 sec, f/6.3, ISO 250, Compensation: -2/3
She even realized the need to throttle back on exposure by 2/3 of a stop to preserve those gorgeous and vivid sunset colors!

Again thank you so much for sharing these precious memories...
All the best on your journey saxman71

Beautiful images. I share your pain on losing a lifetime partner.

Visited there in October. I agree it is awesome. The trail guide and advice from Rangers on crossing the river (no bridge!) gave us the gumption to go for it. We had a wonderful visit although really got to exercise the 4wd on my Cherokee due to a wrong turn.

Amazed at how many people drive through Capitol Reef on UT 24 and think they have seen it. No clue that the park is over 100 mi NS and dozens wide across the waterfold. The 100 mi Cathedral Valley ride was awesome throughout. The 135 mi southern loop also very nice. And then there are the wash hikes and critters. We stayed six nights in the Fruita CG accompanied by deer and wild turkey.

And then there are the pies!

We’re going back for more.

Thanks for that link. Describes the drive well. Not for wimps. Don’t try it in your RV!
