I have an EFS 15-85 mm lens that I am not able to get repaired. My local camera shop shipped it to Canon and was told parts were no longer available. They sent it to a local person they use and were told the same thing. Apparently, the problem is with the aperture as the image through the viewfinder is dark and the camera returns an “Err 01” message.
I believe this was a kit lens that came with the camera, 7D II, so it may have not been expensive when new.
I am looking for suggestions what to do with this lens short of using it as landfill. Would any parts be salvageable or useful to anyone? I am happy to donate it to any worthy cause. At the same time I am looking for suggestions for a replacement. I use it primarily for family events and walking about exploring.
Appreciate any thoughts.
I would see if the Local repair person wants it, there might be parts that could help someone else in future.
More important that the ongoing sorrow for the loss, what is the replacement? Forward, forward, always forward.

Absolutely. Thinking about a used 24-70 mm f/2.8L II or the 24-105 mm f/4L IS.

For a crop sensor, still? Both great lenses, but not the best choice for a cropped body. I'd look at the newest EF-S 18-135 for a cropped body. The 24-105L II is a better match against the top-tier 24-70L II for full-frame options.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Just to confirm, we are talking about the EFs 15-85 and not the Efs 17-85, correct? The Canon 15-85mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM is still available new at B&H for $799 and is still listed on Canon's website (albeit it is out of stock and perhaps will be officially discontinued). I would be surprised if B&H would sell a new lens with a Canon warranty if it could not be serviced. As a result, just to be certain I would suggest contacting Canon directly yourself. However, even if they are still willing to repair it, the cost of the repair will likely be prohibitive. You may be able to purchase a refurbished EFs 15-85 for less money than a repair. If you regularly shoot wide like I do, you may not be happy with an EFs 18-135 because 15mm is very significantly wider than 18mm. The difference at the wide end is not subtle.

Someone somewhere may need the glass, mount, or other parts internal/external. Offer "for parts" on Ebay and elsewhere, just be clear about "non-repairable" or "Canon says' non-repairable". Someone out there needs parts from it.......
I’d buy a new one but you could look for another damaged lens for $0 somewhere on the the web and use it for parts. A local repair person may be able to fix it.

Did they say what was actually wrong with it (what part or assy)? My lens repair efforts have often been stymied by the same part failing on many examples of a particular lens, so it would be good to know and to communicate that.

Thanks, MW. I have another wider lens so I am okay on that front.

The person I spoke to said that the aperture needed to be replaced. I don’t know if that is helpful but it is all I have.

I'd be willing to bet most if not all of the same lens that need repair have the same failure, but I'd include that info if you sell it. Still, I bet there is someone out there looking for the glass or other parts - we know folks scrape their front glass in falls and drops, bad handling, etc.)....
