Have any of you HH photo people ever used Metz products? B&H had an ad for their wireless flash Transceiver $43.99 and the Receiver for $59.99. These will work for any of the camera made. I was thinking about using them for my Sony cameras and would like some feedback on this product either pros or cons so I know what I am getting into if I should decide to purchase these items. Thanks for the feedback.

Metz potato mashers was the standard of wedding photographers for many years. Their quality is excellent. They still make a line of speed lights that I would rate as good if not better than OEM equipment.

I have Metz products from years ago, no longer in use. The dry-fit battery died and leaked. I big mess of jelled acid or something. I read they have an up grade kit to convert it to Li Ion. But it is still old, mid 1980s.

I am going to use their products for my wireless flash control with my Sony cameras. Received an ad with a Metz product at $53.99. Could not believe the price and this is why I was asking for your feedback on this product. Going to use the Metz on my Sony HVL-60M flash non wireless mounted on a light stand and have a Sony HVL.-20M Flash mounted on top of the camera mounted on a Sirui 75 mm pan head tripod.

I use a Metz as my on camera flash (it has both the bounce head and a direct fill flash which is great for an on camera flash. It is built like a tank and I prefer that one over Nikons flashes - agreeing with the sentiments from the above posts (except the one complaining about a 40 year old NiCd battery leaking - seriously???) - and you can get a converter cable so it can run off the Godox/Flashpoint battery packs if you need big capacity (# of flashes) and/or really fast recycle speed,
For off camera I use the Godox/Flashpoint 360" with a Godox/Flashpoint on camera controller - that system is great and you can do your light balancing right on an easy interface on the controller - will run up to 4 groups of flashes.

I don't have the transmitter and receiver you talked about. I have used Metz products going back to 1977. In fact Metz is the only brand of flash that I bought new. I have other brands but I only bought them used. I had 2 45CT1. A 60-CT2 and a 60CT4.

Looks like Metz went into receivership - don't know if it will be resurrected.
Buyer beware

Damn shame

Still use a CT-45 and a CT-60... One is about 30 years old and other 20... Never failed.

New stuff? I have no idea how good they are.

Metz has been around for 75-years.

Back in the day, their 2-piece portable strobe was very popular among professional wedding photograher and process shooters.

Their latest Speedlights and accessories are a far cry from their ancestors which were known to take a lickin' and keep on tickin' sort of thing, however, they are still produced in Germany, probably a bit more powerful than the run-of-the-mill Speedlighst and can be integrated withte TTL exposure control system of most modern cameras.

The old units had either multiple capacitors in the shoulder-carried power pack and the Mecablitza (potato-masher-shaped unit) had a large capacitor in the handle. These designs allowed more space for the capacitors and the output was in the 100 to 200 wat-second range. Their best Speedlight probably outputs about 80-watt seconds.

If you want a traditional Speedlight, the Metz is a good choice- they are robustly built and will p deliver years of service. Remember, you get want you to pay for in electronic flash so the price is higher than most other popular brands.

As for lighting aesthetics, I prefer some of the odd models with round parabolic interchangeable reflectors, user changeable flash tubes, and enablement of bare bulb applications. If you are going to invest in a high-end flash, someof the Godox and Flashpoint models with power pack options may serve you better. You will have more power for bounce and modifier usage, more flashes per charge, and some models do have compatibility with the TTL system in various cameras.

Thanks for the rudeness. Sorry I forgot to mention the model number and the fact that it used a couple different types of 500 volt batteries. Nothing like an old pocket calculator Ni-CD battery. I was not dissing the brand just explaining why I no longer use it. And know nothing of their current products. The Li-ion conversion kit costs more than a new other brand flash I could buy today. Feel free to buy me a new battery before the flash tube burns out on this vintage piece.

So to the OP, Metz is probably still a good brand. Isn't that everyone said more or less.

My dryfit doesn't leak but dies. So I had to build a replacement NiMH and a Li-Ion. Didn't cost me much. The only thing is that I could charge the NiMH with the charger that came with the flash but it's not the best for the battery. The Li-Ion absolutely has to be charged outside with a newly built charger.

After doing some research I only need 2 Metz Transceivers because they work both as a transmitter and as a receiver. I hope after I purchase the pair I will not have any problems configuring them to work. Could not find the manual online to study it before I received the two units. Is there a website that Metz has that I can get the online manual from and study it before the units arrive?
