Have an opportunity to purchase a Nikon D3200 for pennies on the dollars. Would be used as a “when the kids want to borrow my stuff”, camera. Thoughts on pros, cons, quality? I am a Canon guy.

Go for it. I bought next model D3300 for my kid for the very same reason.
Even with just the kit lens it is a good camera kids can grow up on. It also has a help mode within the camera itself for new users.

If you're a Canon household, there's no sharing options of EF / EF-S lenses onto a Nikon F-mount. You can only share the SD memory cards. The camera is a fine knockabout model for a novice, but for equipment and knowledge sharing, you'd be better served staying within the Canon family.

The 3200 is comparable with some canon rebel series. The basic are the same and you should have no problem to use it.....

Excellent camera...compact, lightweight, and has one of the best sensors ever used in a DX camera. In most circumstances, and in the right hands, it's capable of producing images as good as much more costly cameras.

I am not wealthy, so I only buy and use Nikon D3XXX family of cameras. I have never been in a situation where I could not take the photograph I wanted (due to camera limitations) (but then I learned photography shooting film in the 1970s, so I was more limited then, due to film in the camera limitations, than I am with my D3000 and D3300.)

I had a D3100, great starter camera. I sold it to a friend several years ago and he is still using it.

HI killroy, not sure what your budget is, but have you considered one of the Canon Rebel series instead? I only ask because you are already a "Canon guy". The Rebels are very capable cameras with controls from full auto to full manual and everything in between. It would be familiar to you, so easy to teach your kids how to use, and to answer questions they might have. Also, probably the main reason for staying with Canon would be the ability for you all to share lenses and accessories, however much you might save with buying the nikon up front, you'd more than make up for that, almost immediately by not having to invest in another brand's accessories.

Great camera and easy for beginners. Add an 18-140 lens and you’re covered.

The D3200 is capable of good images. It accepts even the oldest Nikon lenses without modification. It's a fun camera for me since I still have several wide angle, normal, and portrait lenses from the when the F was introduced. The kit 18-55 zoom is not bad. It is plenty sharp and also focuses at 12" for reasonable close-up work. It also has live HDMI output in case you want to show old photos, probably on a copy stand or tripod/music stand combo, to anyone who might benefit from seeing them a large screen TV. Battery life is excellent except for Live View where you might get off 5 shots. Keep it in your car if nothing else.

It was my first DSLR and at the time I was thrilled to have it. I was just starting my hobby of photography. I later gave it to a family member and as far as I know it is still being used. Go for it!

Like others have said I don't think you can go wrong, I have a D5500 that I allow my 5 year old Grandson to use by himself, He has a ball, taking pictures like his grandpa does. Some of pictures are pretty good, I had a 35MM on it at thanksgiving dinner, he cracked me up when he was trying to a picture and said I have to get closer, I guess I should show him how to use the 18-55MM kit lens I have.

In a couple of years I will just give it to him with a couple of lens, I use my D500 almost all the time

Getting them started is a great idea.

I'm about to offer my D3200, 2 lenses, new camera bag, many batteries and instruction books to get anyone started. I bought a D3200 for my wife's nephew to use in another country. He's using it for wedding photography and doing well in a short time. Highly recommended as a 24 MP beginner's camera. Maybe I should offer my camera 'package' on UHH as well as ebay?
