I can't get Affinity Photo to open (Win 10 laptop)

Update for those still there and interested:

I contacted the Affinity Forum. Seems like a change made in Affinity 1.9 updates is incompatible with my Windows computer setup. Specifically, Affinity has a problem with the "OpenCL acceleration" part on my system. The solution is to deactivate the Affinity "Photo OpenCL performance acceleration" feature. With Affinity running you can do this in the Preferences menu. Since I can't run the app I have to resort to manual means. I'm still working on this.

OK, Drbob, I've gotten a little further with this issue. I have to go into the "PerformancePreferences.xml" file in "C:\Users\....\AppData\Roaming\Affinity\Photo\1.0\Setting" and change one word in one of the lines in that file. I have been able to find the file but, since I don't even know what an xml file is, I have some learning to do. Apparaently you can make the changes in a text editor like Wordpad but I'm not sure how to do that yet. Any suggestions?

Yes you can copy the xml file and paste it into WordPad. Just open WordPad and paste what you copied. Then you can make the changes and paste the new xml back to the original place. I would set a restore point before I started anything. That way if you screw something up you can return to what you had before you started tinkering. If you like I can pm you my number and you can text me and I maybe able to step you through the process. I'm in Eastern time so almost bed time for work tomorrow but I get off at 6 tomorrow evening if you want to collaborate on the fix. Why don't you update to the latest affinity Photo version of 1.10.4. It may solve your issue

Thank you much for your offer, I might take you up on it. You mention updating Affinity to 1.10.4. But therein lies the problem. I did the update but can't get it to launch. A change made after the 1.9 version is apparently incompatible with my Windows setup. It is an xml file in the 1.10.4 version that needs to be changed.

I'll work on it tomorrow and let you know. Thanks again.

BTW, I'd suggest using Notepad instead of WordPad for correcting/editing the xml file. Notepad only reads and writes text files, so you will not inadvertently write your output file in some other file format. And just to make sure that the saved file does not have an extra .txt on the end of it, be sure to save the file as "name.xml" where 'name' is the name of the original file. The double quotes are part of the new file name. They must be typed in the Save field. --Richard

Ok so since you can't get it to run I'm assuming you can't uncheck the box in preferences performance. There is a box there that you must check to run open cl then do a restart. I'm running an Nvidia 2070 super so that is most likely why I did not have the issue. And yes it will be better to use notepad instead of WordPad. Whatever you are best with. Make sure the restore point is made. Double and triple check your edit before you apply it. Sometimes I make an important edit get it ready to install and walk away for an hour or so. Come back and double check before I install the edit. When you are playing with the registery you need to be sure. Lol. If you can happen to get to the performance box just uncheck open cl performance. Waiting for the results. Lol lol.

I really had no clue how to make the change in the .xml file. When I first opened the file by double-clicking on it in Windows Explorer I couldn't make any changes to it. I searched on line and got lots of confusing information (xml editors, etc). I finally found a site that gave me detailed step-by-step instructions (https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-edit-xml). I followed the steps and lo and behold I made the xml change and got Affinity 1.10.4 to launch!!!

Thank you very much for your help and encouragement!

Awesome!!!!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Affinity revolution has a free video with the ten steps to edit any photo that is very easy and quite good. I also got a couple courses off Udemy. I really enjoy editing now. Lol
