Hi Rich, I am flattered by your comments, but I do have problems with exposure sometimes. My camera is a Canon Power Shot S3 that I haven't had very long. It's a little hit-and-miss when taking very contrasting light scenes. Do I lower the exposure, do I alter the I.S.O. or neither of these and use the manual A.V. and guess the F.stop? As you can tell, I have only recently took photography seriously. Thanks for your welcome! David.

YOU don't have a problem with exposure of very contrasty light scenes . . . your camera has the problem. Situations of very bright light and very dark shadows are beyond the ability of the digital sensor. The only real solvers of this problem are to either light the shadow area to bring the light level closer to the same as the bright areas, or to shoot a number of exposures at different setting on a tripod, ranging from proper exposure for the brightest area down to proper exposure for the shadow areas. These images can then be combined using the best exposed areas of each. The result is called HDR or high dynamic range.

Search on this forum for HDR and you will find some great examples and explanations.

The fact that you recognize that you have a problem means you are halfway to solving it. Hang in there . . . that's the real joy of photography!

Welcome to the forum!
