Flash is bright but short range. “Light painting” requires tripod and open shutter.

Sounds like your using the flashlight as a continuous light source. I suspect you will have to crank the ISO to maintain decent shutter speed. But that’s ok just turn on in-camera noise reduction and maybe if needed, use additional noise reduction when processing.

Curiosity mostly, a lot of light. Quite a while back I saw someone using an LED panel on what appeared to be a DSLR. They were inaccessible in another building at a distance, so I suppose it could have been a movie instead of stills, but it looked like still shooting so intrigued me. With the available ISO, I'll be surprised if it doesn't work. I can't imagine I'll get something interesting enough to be worth a lot of post work (not a favorite pass time of mine anyway). Just foolin' around!

I was photographing supercars outside of a swanky restaurant on Marco Island when this guy, who was doing videography for a corporate meeting, begged me to tag along and shoot stills for him. Just out of the blue 🤔 But I was solo and excited to be asked.

I just had a D850 and a fast prime so no flash of any kind. I go with them over to the beach with no idea how I'm going to get any shots. But NBD right. Who needs light anyway. I spent 30 minutes shooting on the beach with nothing but moonlight and with someone's cell phone flash turned on. I got some decent shots at the beach and some great stuff the next day when I had real light.

As it turned out, all the supercars belonged to the guys I was photographing 🤩

Thanks! I've done some night shots on vacation with the DF - no flash at all and have gotten some keepers. Intrigued by the experiment since I always have a flashlight after dark, or anytime I have one of the cars. If it were reliable...something useful in the toolbox on occasion.

Continuous lighting can be used for stills as well and the main advantage is being able to see the light and shadows.

I suspect your idea will work fine. 🙂

I have a really nice aluminum light that is also a stun gun. It looks like a regular small aluminum barrel flashlight and has a rechargeable battery.
I haven't been able to get any volunteers to try it out on.

will

Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't, even the professional grade used by LEO. Have a plan B! In the old days, to carry one you had to experience it first hand.

I use SkyWolfEye, Google it from Amazon. There are 1 and 2 battery models & come with chargers. Usually under $30. The 2 battery ones are brighter, the others are more compact.

Always looking, thanks! Based on experience with Surefire, got to be a couple of decades, I'm brand loyal as all getout, but there is always a need for something new in one of the cars or the truck. I can certainly upgrade those.

Darn, some folks can really read between the lines. As non lethal, you might take a look at the Kimber Pepper Blaster. I have various retired Professional friends who like them a lot.

I find it interesting that so many products are now called "tactical." I have tactical shirts and pants.

Kinda like "Operator" an they aren't talking about Ernestine. I don't wear Tactical clothing - seems a little like wearing a Kick Me sign but worse.

I don't know what's tactical about my shirts and pants, except that the fabric is tough, and there are more pockets. I like more pockets.
