I've played around with 'Light Painting' occasionally. What I've fount is that the super bright lights don't cast a 'warm' light, rather it's a harsh, intense light that doesn't play well with the final night image.

The photo I've included shows a light painted Ironwood tree in full bloom. I first tried a super bright LED but the tree was so white that it looked as though it was frozen. I kept playing around with an assortment of flashlights that I had brought along.

The tree in the photo was shot while I painted it with a pocket size mini-mag light, with an incandescent bulb and with half dead batteries. The camera was taking a ten-shot series of fifteen-second exposures while I painted the tree.

The first year I lived here had one fail shortly after I had seen an Rattlesnake near. Got away with it but no pleasant experience.

That sounds like a scene from so many movies.

Pretty much, but scarier. Walking up an unlit driveway to a house closed to the weather but not complete, 2 people & 3 dogs, rattle, glimpse of the snake and the flashlight punks out. Fortunately Rattle snakes don't come after people. One of the dogs bitten the next morning not far from the spot, sick for a bit but lived. I have killed them on my property on sight ever since.

Have to admire it when a UHH reaches beyond his/her photography comfort zone and tries a project beyond what is normally seen. Thanks for your techniques and post.

Too kind, but thanks! The snow must go first - the week end looks good weather wise.

No - the one I got, straight off the Surefire shipping confirmation:
Fury-DFT FL Dual Fuel Tactical. it comes with a rechargeable SF 18650B battery and charging cord. The rechargeable battery increases lumens and run time, plus saves a lot of money. It will run on the CR123A, but even from Surefire they are $24.95 a dozen. I use the light for a particular purpose and require the single bright setting. If you plan more general use, consider one that has a low as well as a high setting. If you plan to carry CR123A, you will need a case - I have one from Surefire that safely holds 6. Great flashlights, I'm sure there are others as good or possibly better, but the best I've used myself, that use for many, many years.

Having had experiences in police work, and later living in a variety of rural areas, I have always valued high quality flashlights. Many years ago I got one of the first Surefire flashlights, before they even were Surefire, but were still Laser Products. That wonderful flashlight still works perfectly, but over the years, I have bought a couple of newer, more powerful models. Last week I received a Surefire Fury DFT (Dual Fuel Tactical) - amazing! Still small but 1,500 lumens. Tried it out at zero dark thirty this morning walking the dogs, it really lit things up, and out to 250 meters.
Immediate thought is to try some flashlight photography, which I will do. Curious if anyone has experience doing flashlight photos they would care to share.

Not sure if you are talking about using flashlight instead of flash or light painting, if light painting here is a link where I tried for the first time.

Thanks for the link, will give it a look! Flashlight for illumination of a subject under low light conditions. I have some flash attachments and a remote trigger used in the past, but was impressed by the 1500 Lumen beam, considered use with a fast mid range tele like the old 80-200 2.8.

Back in the middle of September I came up with a new sport - night hunting Rattlesnakes. One startled my Wife so I went out with Surefire and Shotgun. Worked a treat! We'll see with cameras!

Ha ha my favorite snake repellent is 12ga.

You simply can’t let them live in the yard, or on your property. But I leave them alone in the wildernesses.

Outside of my land, not my business. Non venomous snakes, never a problem. Shotgun is good if I am in or near the house, if not a shovel or whatever will do the trick.

You're welcome! Probably started you down a somewhat expensive road, but once you've had a really good flashlight nothing else will do.
