Problems with Topaz Sharpen

I have had Topaz Sharpen for quite awhile. From time to time (sometimes frequently), there is an update. If so, when I tell LR to edit an image in Topaz Sharpen, the Sharpen programs says it wants to install an update and I let it, then redo the request. It has always worked. Last week it didn't. I said to yes, install, which canceled the actual Sharpen process on that image. But it didn't install. And now when I try to go from LR to Sharpen, nothing happens. I tried going to Sharpen directly, and it wouldn't work either.

Does anyone else have this problem with the current update? How can I fix this problem?

I've had a couple of recent experiences, especially with DeNoise, with the "plug in" process that automatically creates a TIF file, opens up DeNoise and that file, and then returns the processed file to Lightroom. Sounds like a similar condition may be in Sharpen, at least at your site.
The two general guidelines are 1) make sure you've closed the standalone Sharpen app before retrying to start the "plug in" process in LR with Photo>Edit in>(Topaz application name), and
2) uninstall and reinstall, which unfortunately sounds like it didn't work for you.
I've found Topaz' support line to be very helpful, although it may take a day to get a reply back from them.
Sorry for your troubles.

I don't have that problem but I suggest that you open Topaz Sharpen on its own and tell it to look for updates (it may be under a HELP menu or some such). If you successfully manage to get it updated, go back in to Lr and re-instruct it to include Sharpen as one of its external editors.

Thanks. I know that sometimes their updates cause problems. I've just not had it refuse to work before!

Thanks, RG. I tried that but didn't see where to "look for updates." I'll see if it's under "Help."

I understand you to say sharpen does not work at all now? If so, you may need to uninstall and then re-install it from scratch. I believe at times that things go wrong during installations due to interruptions, maybe due a power blip or another porgram, etc. I had another program that would not accept a passcode nothing, I did or support said helped, I eventually erased even the empty folder(no hidden files, I checked) for program and then all went well. Many don't know computer data in memory or drives is not immediately erased, just the pointer pointing to address of the data is changed, why you can unerase files. With computer memory data is lost on rebooting, but may well be still there, just no address to retrieve it. So something could well be hidden, but there to interfere.

I've had that issue occasionally w/the Topaz apps on Windows: I launched the plugin from LR and processed a photo, similar to what you describe. When I tried to process another photo w/the plugin, it simply would not launch. I found (via Windows Task Manager) that a process for the app was still running in the background, even though the app appeared to be closed. After terminating the process in Task Manager, the plugin worked again.

I found the Topaz help telephone number very helpful in a similar situation, Kathy.

I have rebooted, so that should be cleared. I'm trying again this afternoon. Thanks.

Rebooting should clear any pieces of trash left in memory, which is why it can help, along with shutting down things we might not even know are running.

Once I wrote an endless do loop and after a while endless numbers showed on the screen, data left in memory from previous program runs.

I always assumed that wanting my PC to do multiple tasks while in PSCC is asking for problems. So, when the Topaz Lab software wants to update the program, I decline and either use the current version or shut down PS and then do the update. If I haven't used Topaz for a while, I just open each one and check for updates before I start a project.

Good news! This time Sharpen actually opened (wouldn't do that before), and I found the "update" thing under Help. It took a long time, but it worked. AND I found also under Help a link to reconnect it with Photoshop. And doing that also reconnected it to LR! Now it worked and I was able to do it normally again.

THANK YOU, everyone!

If the issue continues, I would un-install Sharpen AI and re-install it. Sometimes an update doesn’t go as intended, but a re-installation usually corrects the issue.
