I have the R and had a non-Canon wide angle lens that gave all the same answers as above, but would not autofocus using the adapter. Unless camera set to operate without lens attached, camera did nothing, don't believe it even came on. Lens works fine on 60 and 70d, but only in manual on R.

I know makers often have exacting specs which sometimes don't have to be followed exactly, but warn that not doing so may cause unexpected problems. I suspect that is true at least for my lens.

This simply means the camera doesn't "recognize" the lens. Not surprising, really, since it's a 3rd party lens. You'll definitely see this same thing if you ever use one of the inexpensive, manual focus & manual aperture lenses that have no electronic contacts at all.

I'm curious though... In this case it sounds like the lens was capable of autofocus. After you set the camera to "shoot without lens", did the AF begin to work? (It sounds like it did not.)

Also, once set that way is the camera able to control the aperture and give accurate exposures? (Or, is it possible to manually control that too... or are you just shooting with it "wide open" all the time?)

Have you contacted the lens maker to see if it's possible to update so that the R recognizes it?
