mgstrawn, thanks much! I do make cards and think that the grand daughter's next birthday card may see his picture on the front! She loves cats!

On way to lunch in Winslow wife caught these really unexpected shots. We were cruising along at 75mph up IH17 South of Flagstaff when traffic in front of us began slowing down in a rather quick fashion. Then started seeing sleet then snow with more and more slush build up on the road. On the other side of the median saw a SUV had rolled and a lot of other vehicles behind him were either in the median or the ditch on the other side. There were even a few on our side that had slid off the road. We had heard that there had been a little snow in Flagstaff the night before but had not expected to see any on this little excursion.

[quote=mgstrawn]I'm so sorry to be 'missing in action' most of the day. I started at 9:30 P.M. tonight to catch up where I left off (page 2!) when my husband and I left the campground with our camper to come home. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the submissions and the many stories of how those shots came about. I hope you all have had a wonderful Saturday; it has been an incredible fall day in Georgia, USA! I am setting my alarm clock for 3:00 A.M. Eastern Standard time to see the predicted meteor shower! Thank you all for taking the time to post and share!

Wasn't close to that there MOOSE! In the Car and telephotoed it

You bet!

Annette – I’m so sorry you are having to go through this with your Stepdad and I am dismayed to know you have landed in the hospital. Thank you so much for letting us know and you will be in all of our thoughts and prayers!

Me too,Annette

After being gone for 2 days I have some catching up to do.....
I wanted to share this unexpected photo op that really made me happy. I was in the Badlands, the evening would soon be over, and I was following some of the wild horses along the road. They stopped and crossed the road and headed up a small hill. I quickly got out of my vehicle and headed up the hill after them. This one stopped for just a moment and then was off with the others. Then it soon was dark out, but I was happy!

Welcome to the Daily Challenge as we share 'Unexpected Photo Opps!' As an avid amateur photographer, my camera is never far away. I even bought a special camera purse from Rivernan that allows me to discreetly carry my camera everywhere! There have been many times that unexpected photo opportunities have presented themselves to me, and some of my attempts to capture the moment have been successful, but many have not! There's nothing like a missed photo opportunity due to your lack of knowledge about a certain aspect of photography that will send you to your manual or the Internet to look for solutions. That is how I happened upon UHH!

Today, share with us some of those "WOW" moments that blew you away when you uploaded your photos. My 'wow' moments are inferior to many of you with so much expertise and talent. I am honored and humbled everyday to be in the company of so many amazing photographers. I can't wait to see your submissions!

JoeV – Your photos are ALWAYS ‘Wow!’ Do you use any post processing filters such as Topaz? I can see #3 in a frame on my wall! I missed a photo opp of a Blue Heron yesterday! Great capture.

What a nice thing to say. Sorry about my slow response time here.

I actually can't quite answer your question..I don't use Topaz filters...and I don't quite understand what the definition of a pp filter is, even though I looked it up. I tweak most of my better shots....usually between "a little" and "moderately" with the PhotoPaint application of Corel Graphics Suite X3. I will edit big time if I have too on occasion.

I wonder if part of the answer lies elsewhere. My camera...Canon T3i...has a variety of settings which I think are pretty standard...allowing me to select different modes of in-camera processing...e.g. "Landscape" and "Neutral" and several others. If I'm not sure of a shot, I will sometimes use both the Landcape mode and my personal default setting so I can pick the best.

There is also an automatic setting, with preset values for contrast, sharpness, and saturation. When I first got my camera, I customized this automatic setting, overriding the factory preset, to get the look I wanted. That may have something to do with whatever it is you are responding to.

And I always underexpose a little.
