I don't try to have one printer that does it all. I have an old Canon Pro9000 Mark II that I use for photos and and all-in-one for my everyday scanning and printing of documents, etc. Having two printers takes up more real estate in my home office, but it works out better for me.
BTW, that old Canon Mark II is a workhorse that continues to put out fine prints.
[quote=gitano48]From personal experience can any of the many astute Hedgehoggers recommend a good quality color printer that doesn’t break the bank (under $300) with good fidelity and is reliable?
I've been using the Canon iP8720 for a couple of years now and with no problems, even with third party inks. I use a calibrated monitor, and get good results. It's available for $279.99 at present through the Canon website.

I’m very frustrated with what I’m using now: a Canon iP1800 that has satisfactory color rendition but with feeder problems (4x6 in particular), and an HP Envy 7858 that prints over-saturated colors with extreme contrast….no matter how I try to manipulate hue intensity and saturation. Flesh tones are terrible. The HP is relatively new but I’m not happy with either one.
I appreciate any suggestions offered.

I use a Canon pixma ip8720 which has been efficient and has produced quite good color, however, it is limited in the sizes of photos . If you look it up, you may find that it will do 4x6, 5x7,8x10 13x19. It doesn't appear to me that it will print 11x14 or 11x17, or square photos. Pretty sure I paid under $300.00 for it. Hope this helps a little.
Is 13x19 a standard paper size?
It will print any size up to 13" x 19" to the best of my knowledge.

Yes. Both Canon and Epson make photo printers for that size. They also offer paper that size. All the other paper makers do too.
The aspect ratio of 35mm film, and now full frame sensors, is a very close match to 13x19 paper.

Thanks,
Next issue are frames that size easily accessible or you into custom framing that gets pricey?

I just got back from a place called Michaels. They had 13x19 frames (for cheap) and they had (cheap) pre-cut mats to go into larger frames.
I have a local Michael's and have bought 16x20 and 8.5x11.
Thanks
My experience with inkjet printers that they are not reliable. Clogged heads is a common problem. My very first printer is an ink jet (an HP Deskjet Plus bought in 1989) and it's reliable but because the head is built in to the ink cartridge which makes the ink even more expensive. I used it until 2010 and it's still going fine. I got rid of it because I moved to another state. I hang on to it because it has a serial port and it supports PCL3.
The best I have found is a Brother. I have had lots of trouble with canons and HP’s. My Brother has never skipped a beat.
I have some old IP6700DCanon Printers that are build like tanks and have never failed me in over 10 years.
They print great photos on good paper.
You can still find them on Ebay. The ip6600D was an earlier model with the same specs.
I also have a Canon ip8720 that produces great large photos. It's a new model but it and the IP6700D have the same specs.
Thanks for the information
