When to upgrade camera
Have a Nikon D500
When is it time to upgrade will it still has value and when up grade to what?
or Wate a will and see what come out?
I have a D500. I will die with it.
The best time to upgrade an apex camera like the Nikon D500 is within a month of it breaking, preferably the weeks before rather than afterward. As you probably don't know when the camera is going to die, you can at least check the shutter count and justify using it completely through the 200,000 expected shutterlife. There won't be anymore Nikon DSLRs, so put your GAS away on changing to another cropped DSLR.

Normally, I’d say trade every other generation. But wait until the second year of production of your new one.
However, it’s time for MILC, not dSLR.
Trying to time this perfectly is mostly a game of chance… and the market.
Thanks for the GREAT replay

When it no longer does what you need.
I’m still using my 8 year old Df.

Always difficult predicting the future, things are constantly in motion.
Please see CHG_CANON's response it is good advice but difficult to implement due the above sentence.
Now I will give you my opinion:
Upgrade your camera when you have identified shortcomings in your current gear that are holding you back from achieving your goals.

But, it's a Nikon D500. How could that be possible? Predicting the day the shutter dies seems the more likely future event.

;)
So that means he shouldn't upgrade until the camera breaks. ;)
Do you think you need an upgrade? The D500 is a fine camera. If I had one, I'd use it until it no longer worked.
It is time to upgrade when your present camera lacks features you need in your photography.

No, a few weeks before the camera breaks
William, outside of a camera's accurate shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, what more does one need?

I thought the D500 was the only APSC format camera to get and nothing could be better ever as it is the absolute best.
So there is no way to ever get something better ever according to UHH.
