One possibility that I can think of.
Were you viewing the file contents in file explorer? (Window OS)
if so, if you do a soft double click on a filename, just the filename will be selected.
Then hitting the del key (and maybe others) will leave you with a file with no extension.
Been there done this, immediately doing a Ctrl-Z resets the original filename.
Thanks to all who have responded to my original post. I have never used the cable to transfer photos always using a reader. I have used two different readers with the same result. I will use a different card and see what results that gives me. I think the card might be the most likely cause of the problem.
