Funny!

Thanks, Jerry. I don't think either the fish or the bird saw the humor in the situation. I was just shooting away hoping for a good shot.

Surprised the heron didn't just stab it with its beak. Probably enjoying the game. Nice catch.

That would make sense, wouldn’t it? I believe that GBH generally catch fish by clamping them in their beaks rather than stabbing them.

This Great Blue Heron had a problem. In a shallow bay on Long Island, it caught a Blow-fish. The fish was small enough in the water, but blew up immediately, too big for the Heron to swallow. The next six minutes were like a bad comedy routine. The Heron would put the fish down, and it would shrink to normal size. The Heron would pick it up again, and the fish would inflate. Finally, the fish gave up, probably out of the water too long, and the Heron flew away with its dinner. Very entertaining.

I grew up on Long Island. We used to catch and eat “American” blowfish all summer. Only the tail half has meat. The Japanese puffer fish, or fugu, is the poisonous fish.

Thanks, Joe. The bird won in the end.
I don't know if the fish caught by the GBH is related to the pufferfish found in Japan (Fugu) - BUT - if it IS, the fish may have the last laugh.

Blowfish, known in Japan as fugu, is a highly prized delicacy both as sashimi or as an ingredient in soup, but the fish's liver, ovaries and skin contain the poison tetrodotoxin and the parts must be removed by specially trained and licensed preparers. There is no known antidote to the poison.
