There are several good 3rd party books/manuals that tell you how to get the most out of your camera. The factory manuals purpose is to show you how the camera and its features function, not to teach photography.

yeh, David Busch's manual looks promissing, going to download it on Nook. Thanks (someone) for that. Ed

The first thing I do when I buy an advanced technology camera is to order David Busch's book about it. Some of the settings suggested by David Busch reflect his personal preferences and might not be yours. The books will help you become familiar with the camera and its thousands of combinations of settings. He presents everything in a very logical and easy to understand format.

Once you achieve that you can adopt your own formulas. It seems that the most advanced cameras are the most difficult to master. That is the price of versitility and capabilities.

The owner manuals are packed with information but I use them as a reference but would not be inclined to read them from cover to cover.

Dummies books are great. They make you feel smart ... or at least feel like a much smarter dummy :-)

I have several on different subjects but my wife and daughter refuse to use them because of the word "Dummies" - they are afraid someone will see them with them and make a judgement.

With 20-20 hindsight I'll raise you one. I shoulda bought one of his books before I made the "buy" decision for any camera in the past.

My cel phone has the capabilities of doing everything but walking my dog, unfortunately as more capabilities are added, it has become more and more difficult to use to the point where IN FACT I have begun to phase it out in favor of email.. When ordering on line, I tell vendors that I don't have a working telephone, escentially true....

I use what I call a "Hello/Goodbye" phone....never use all the bells and whistles they have packed into them

I am not arguing with them about it. They both know how to use sharp things and I taught both to shoot.

My wife is a retired Surgical RN and OR Charge Nurse and our daughter is a 3rd Year Medical student at UVA who for over a year with Covid has spent a lot of time working in hospitals around Virginia due to staff shortages. She wants to be a surgeon so some of them have been giving her sort of "accelerated" lessons. Last week she had a chief surgeon tell her to close up a patient so he could get to an emergency accident victim. Just her and the emergency room's chief surgical nurse to watch her and offer support.

If they don't want to use my Dummies books that is OK. I'll use it as an excuse to buy another book on the same thing.

doesn't have anything to do with teaching photography, I know what I want the camera to do, just sometimes it is difficult to figure out how to tell the camera to do it... In most cases the capabilities of the camera is what I bought the damn thing for so I know what it can or cannot do, just need better instruction in how to "drive" it. I tried to set the shutter to what used to be called "bulb" and buried my head in the manuel & ten minutes later still could not figure out how to do it...

Did you ever find the setting for the double press method? I've been using an intervalometer to do this.
