toss the card in the trash and try a new card in the camera...if it works, your problem is solved. If the same symptom occurs, then you know it is the camera.

Are you saying the card is too small to hold an image?

So you’re saying the size of the card is the reason I’m getting the conflicting messages?
I don’t follow that.

Did you considered reviewing the manual for the Pentax K-50? You could have saved yourself all day on this question ...

Unlike Canon and Nikon manuals, Pentax doesn't seem to provide an estimated file size for each of the many JPEG quality (and RAW) options. However, on page 285, you can find a chart of the estimated file capacities per 2GB card. If 214 JPEG images are expected to find on a 2GB card in the 3-star 'best' setting, it's relatively easy math to determine those files would average 9.3MB each.

Well, here's my WAG on this. When you try to record an image, the camera 'looks' at the card & sees that there is not enough room on the card, so it says 'card is full,' and the camera won't record the image. But, when you ask a computer to display the image, the computer says the card is empty.

It’s not a computer that’s saying the card is empty, it’s the camera saying there’s “no image to display”. It’s the same camera that says “the card is full.”

Other cards work fine. How does that solve the problem with the old card?

What does the computer say? If the card is full of Word files for example, or corrupted image files, then it seems to me the camera might very well say full but no images to display.

These are not mixed messages. Both are true. From the camera's point of view it can't store an image using the instructions you give it (raw, or large .jpg, little compression) If there is no room to use, then by definition it is full. However the card may also at the same time contain zero images. While it feels like a paradox it is the result of trying to use a laughably too small memory capacity in a modern camera.

I understand that. I’m trying to determine why, in shooting mode, the camera tells me the card is full and in viewing mode it says there’s no image available.

Because even if there is nothing on the card, there isn't enough room for a new photo.

This happens if the card is locked or unlocked.

Any suggestions as to why I’m getting these mixed messages?
Tnx

Yes. The card is too small for the 7.5+ mb images the K-50 produces at the highest quality setting. Choose a lower quality setting that would make a smaller file and it should work. The card is worthless for you use. Put it into an SD card reader, copy whatever is on it to your computer, back up your file(s) and through it away.

😂
Donate card to Smithsonian as an antiquity. Copy any data to your computer and buy a new card. This card won’t hold one image from your camera. Camera knows and is telling you that it won’t hold any images that your camera will create.

OK...place card in the round file. Problem solved.

Then if this is the case, do not use the 8mb card, you now know it does not work, so do not use it, I would hate if you missed a once-in-a-life time shot with it. You might even donate it to a photography museum.

If the file your camera produces is larger then 8mb (quite likely) then the camera will see the card as full, especially if there are old files on the card using up space. Usually the message will read something like "Insufficient Space On Card", but that depends on the camera. A card that old and that small is most likely formatted in FAT16 which can also complicate matters. Some newer cameras won't recognize that format, although that doesn't seem to be the issue. If you want to see what is on the card just put it in your computer and open it. Reading it out of curiosity is understandable, but, the card is otherwise useless in today's cameras.

I've done that before with a 16 MB San Disk card and got similar messages. Tried formatting in the computer beforehand, formatting in different cameras before trying the card in different cameras, nothing made a difference. Took me a couple hours before I figured out what I did wrong.
