Have a chance to spend a day in NYC in the middle of September. Want to do some basic street photos, plus some iconic images such as Rose Reading Room, Oculus, etc. but mainly street scenes. What do you advise for a lens? Am considering the following, all Nikon: 28-300, 17-35, 70-200 and a Sigma ART 50mm 1.4 prime. Can be mounted to a D500 or D750. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for your input.

For starters, what camera are you going to use? A D-500 is a DX (cf) and a D-750 is a FX (ff), the lenses give different perspectives on each format and thus have possibly different uses. Like most TRADITIONAL street photographers I'd pick a fast 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm prime and be done with it. Most of those lenses are small enough no one would pay attention to you nor ask you to leave their property for "being" a non-fee-paying professional. Toting anything longer than about 4" as a lens will gather some notice. A whopping 300mm might give you candids but also other issues. A good digital P&S might be a good alternative.

I use my 28-300 as my walk around. I will cover 99% of your needs. That lens and a wide angle is all I take to Europe and Asia. It covers you needs.

You can ONLY use a 35mm f1,2 prime in NYC.
All other lenses are unacceptable according to the self anointed experts.

No matter what anyone tells you, you'll have to carry the lens. It doesn't walk around.

That said, I'd suggest a 50 or preferably a 35mm lens, or something whose range provides those focal lengths. Personally, considering the crowds that can be on the streets, the physically smaller size lens would be preferred. Thus, the 28~300 and 70~200 would not be my first choice.

I took a trip to Savannah Georgia and wanted to travel light so I took my canon r with a 24-105 and a 70-300. The 70-300 was used for only a few images and all the rest was with the 24-105, however I was very disappointed because the wide end of 24mm was not wide enough and I wished I had taken my 16-35. Next time for city photography such as you want to do I’ll be sure to have the 16-35 and 24-105 only.

The underrated 24-120/F4 Nikon lens (F mount) is actually a very good lens. If you don't need F/2.8 then it is ideal.

Are listed lens DX format? If that be the case, I'd recommend the 28 - 300

Without looking at the other replies, I would say the 17-35mm.

Just curious. How often does anyone really need a slow f2.8 lens?

You should consider the Tamron 18-400 with your D500.

My walk-around lens is a Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM, because I believe in going wide. It's a matter of personal preferences and what you like to photograph.
