This is amazing, Gary! Those little buggers can certainly wreak havoc on a picnic! I’ve saved the video you posted for canonboybob on the homemade trap and will certainly use it. Thanks!

Thanks, Marg. The trap really works for they are carnivorous and they are drawn to the scent of meat. Cat food works well as does a raw chicken back fastened to the bottom side of the board placed over the water. The water should be high enough to nearly touch the bait used. It will clear out a nest of them in a short time.

This is a 5X magnification focus stacked view of a Yellow Jacket.

I've acquired several yellow jackets that I have encountered during daytime walkabouts however this is the first one that I came across in the dark of the night. I found this one actively working around the porch light where I imaging it was looking for an easy meal of the insects that are attracted to the light. It now resides in my collection where it will star in future sessions of various views and magnifications.

Very dramatic image, as always. Your images allow us to peer into a world seldom seen. Looking at this little guy reminds me of the times I've been stung, OUCH!! We get their nests in our rafters. I use a hose with narrow nozzle to knock the nest down and then run like Hell! If I'm not fast enough,...well enough said. They also hang around the hummingbird feeders. Even the hummers give deference to the YJ's. But, your image shows the hidden beauty of these little critters. Well done!

Thanks, SalvageDiver. When they build their nest in the ground is the most troublesome. One doesn't know that they are there until you go over the nest with the lawnmower and then it gets REAL exciting.

Thanks, Khildy. It can be quite startling to see them under magnification.
