After dark shots are definitely about atmosphere. The chances are the lighting will be subdued (i.e. not contrasty, which in turn usually means not dramatic) and the colouring will typically be soft and often with a limited pallet. If you want a shot which abounds in vividness (but not a sunrise or sunset), wait till proper daylight.
.

This is likely true for many landscapes, but street photography at night can be quite vivid and bold.

I love your image but am wondering about the horizontal white line. At first, I thought it was some kind of a structure, but it seems to fade away on the left side.

I knew there would be exceptions that I hadn't thought of . The white line is just the surface of the loch being made ripply by the wind blowing in that part. It's common for that effect to be very localised.

This was at 5am the morning after the May 2021 Lunar eclipse. My mini tripod was essential and I took a few exposures from which I selected this one. After a pixel cleanup session it was ready for sharing. Canon T2i with 18-55mm kit lens.

We had a thunderstorm behind our San Gabriel Mountains last night and I was excited to try some flash photography.

f/6.3, ISO 400, ss varied as I used bulb setting and an IR remote to trigger and end exposures.

It was a huge challenge to focus on the mountains as it was very dark. I got a ton of dead pixels again and, after some research, found pixelfixer.org that solved the problem.

By the definition of night given (anything where the sun is below the horizon), most sunset and sunrise photos would qualify, in which case I probably have more than a thousand photos within the genre. Even laying aside sunrises and sunsets, my biggest challenge was cutting down the number of photos to post. I was surprised how many photos I take at night, and the breadth of approaches.

More of the moon's light being reflected on the sea might have added to the shot. The silhouetted palm trees work well but I would have cloned out the orange patch at the lower left hand edge.

These are all good examples of what the hours of darkness can bring to a shot.

Great suggestions, R.G. I probably can’t do anything about the moon’s reflection but if it’s simple enough, can you PM me your sketch of how I might be able to do that?

The lighting in the lower left is definitely distracting and funny that I never noticed it.

Thanks for nudging me along here

I was thinking more of a compositional choice to not have so much of the bright reflections obscured by the palm trees. The sea being illuminated by the moon is a large part of what makes the shot distinctive. It can be very atmospheric, provided the reflections aren't totally blown.

I see what you mean. I didn’t have the option to move around the balcony much. Not that I would have since I was only focused on the moon with the treetops and clouds. Your reminder to look at the whole scene is good for me to hear.

Love that city scape. Very nicely done.

The black and white shot is wonderfully mysterious.

Those are quite nice. I've never tried anything like this in a storm.

After attempting a boring star photo, I rounded up a few from my archives to add to this interesting thread. Because I use a small sensor camera, I often tinker with such shots in ways that make the noise less bothersome. Besides, tinkering in post is just as much fun for me as taking photos.

1. Bourbon St in New Orleans is a great place for night shots
2. Monhegan Island, Maine, opening of lobster season starts after midnight on Oct. 1 each year, and the fishermen row out to the lobster boats that are loaded with traps and anchored in the harbor.
3. Mesa Arch at sunrise is iconic. Mesa Arch before sunrise is blue.
4.Nashville has the biggest July 4 fireworks show in the US

Santa Barbara street scene. I like the color shot but thought I’d try a black and white conversion which was a challenge in the sky tones.
