Three hours from Dallas to San Diego vs. two days. I'll fly. Yes, once in awhile the drive is nice. Not every time.

FL to Ontario, 3 days up, 3 days back.
That's a whole weeks vacation spent on the road.

A lot of it is the 24/7 news and social media that spreads the information about the problems and nuts. Plus you go back not too far in time and when someone did something like that the other people used the "instant solution and justice system" and got called heroes instead of being arrested and put on trial.

I decided years ago that I was through with flying. This was mainly because of price increases and service reductions by the airlines. As time goes on, passengers are another reason why I won't fly again. A passenger on Frontier Airlines was taped to his seat after he groped two flight attendants and punched a third. Imagine being stuck in an aluminum tube people someone like that.

Yes, I know that 99.9% of all passengers behave. But I also know that as soon as I get on a checkout line, the line stops because of problems. Yesterday, I had to cross a local toll bridge, and the automatic EZPass lane was closed. The lane with the guy in the booth wasn't moving. Then it moved very, very slowly. When I got there, the guy was wiping down the whole interior and closing out. Shift change. When the new guy arrived - walking slower than I thought was possible - he had to go through a whole setup procedure. Really, it was comical. Without even looking at me, he detected the EZPass and opened the gate. So, if you think I would have an uneventful flight, guess again.

I flew for business for about 45 years, and if I never get on another aircraft, that will suit me fine. Between carry ons (checking bags is an invitation to disaster), narrow, hard seats, no leg room, packed aircrafts, trying to find overhead storage, missed connections due to breakdowns, long TSA lines, stupid boarding procedures, struggling through airports from end to end trying to make a connection, nights spent in airports or lousy hotels, not to mention getting up at o dark thirty (and lousy sleep the night before), looking for a parking space at 6AM, freezing on the parking deck and hoping the rental cars on your destination aren’t over booked, yea, closest thing to hell I can imagine.

I was to fly from New Zealand to OZ. When I boarded the Steward looed at me and said : You do not look frightened, I will sit you next to a woman who is terrified" OK!

In the air he asked for drink orders, I ordered Champers, of course, and the lady said" Tomato juice, thanks, I don't drink""

later he told me he was serving her Vodka and juice to mellow her! She could have been on medication...foolish move!

I haven't flown commercial aircraft in years and don't miss it at all. I budgeted and learned to fly my own aircraft. It's not as fast as commercial but it is a lot more relaxed. The FAA has had what they call a Light Sport license and it's a lot less expensive than a standard license. I get to load what I want on the plane, leave and return on my schedule and am able to reach smaller airports without needing a connecting flight. The biggest plus is I get to declare ALL expenses on my business. I've never lost any luggage and my gear is in perfect condition when I land. Some older smaller aircraft can be had for less that $20,000 in some cases which is less than most cars these days. Add a small aircraft to your photography tools and you will open doors you never though possible.

I fly about 5 or 6 times a year and have never had a problem with other passengers…a couple of delays, yes…but no passenger problems. Unless you count the people who insist on jumping out of their seats as soon as the plane stops and stand in the aisle for 20 minutes.😳

Sorry I have to disagree with you. I’m not going to curtail my love of travel because of a problem that might come up. Someone might cause a delay, someone might be unruly, it might rain, it might not meet my expectations. Life is too precious to waste thinking something might go wrong. If we have learned anything after this past year is to LIVE & do it to the fullest. Explore, travel when it’s safe to do so, roam the areas of the world. See what has been created for us. Not let others behaviour dictate our enjoyment.

I'm with you Jerry. I stopped flying after about a million miles in the air a few years ago when I moved back to the US from 10 years abroad. Now I take driving vacations around the beautiful continent we live on. I've covered about 30k miles over the last three years even with the virus slowing me down a bit.

My wife and two kids were unhappy with me when I mapped out a vacation trip loop starting in Atlanta, Ga, going up to Chattanooga, TN, running up to Knoxville, TN, coming down to Charlotte, NC, and back to Atlanta, GA. Took the entire week to do it. Clocked in over 85 different events which included Cherokee Nation museum, Chickamauga, Ga, Dragon store and Tenn. Valley Railroad museum in Chattanooga, TN, Museum of the Appalachia, Clinton, TN, amongst other stops. When we got through our loop, they were very happy with the holiday trip. This happened in early 2000s. Not the same if done flying.

I stopped flying when I had to sit in a seat without a cushion on the plane for three hours. Because I had to reach my son and family, I could not do anything about the cushion. But, I will rather drive than fly commercially, because I love meeting and talking with people along the way.
