This typlically works well as a starting point, remember you can always "fix" noise in post, albeit motion blur not so easily done. Also while I've shot at f/2.8 I find the DOF a tad tight... especially when action is close...

This shot Thomas is spot on. Nice comp, exp. Your so right about the 2.8 thingie it is tight. I will be shooting a few football games next week I hope at night so I must use 2.8 and try to get my focus and crop right on the button. Be well be safe.
