I own 2 Nikons, 2 Panasonics, a Canon, a Pentax, a Kodak, and I could care less if anyone takes cheap shots at any of them. If they can make me laugh, I'm good with it. This brand loyalty over any camera is really lame, unless you work for the manufacturer.

This potato thing goes over my head I guess. I watched the whole thing and didn't laugh once. Had nothing at all to do with cheap shots, and how could Nikon sue anyone over this supposed attempt at humor? He could have stuck an apple, a cantaloupe or a box of Kleenex in front of the lens, I still don't get it. I'm thinking of suing the OP for wasting my time watching it. I guess I'd lose because the chick had a tad of socially redeeming value, that I can't deny...

My "cheap shot" reference wasn't necessarily pointed at just this video, but at all the fan boys of other cameras, Nikon fan boys included, who have to put other brands down simply because they don't like them, or whatever the reason. Not just here on the Hog, but on YouTube or wherever.

I'm just tired of all the negativity towards Nikon, the remarks saying the company is dead, and so on. I did not watch this video to the end, I felt it was stupid and a waste of my time. I stand by my "cheap shot" comment though, because if you read the text that was under the video, it says "Newton plays in the stereotype that Nikon shooters work with older equipment that’s not quite up to par with the latest tech advancements by Canon, Sony, or even Leica". To me, thats a cheap shot. The article also goes on to say that this isn’t the first time Newton has poked fun at the brand either. In his satirical music video titled “Gear Doesn’t Matter,” which was posted just in time for Christmas last year, his lyrics state that he will take anything as a gift — except a Nikon. So again, I stand by my "cheap shot" comment.

Actually, BOTH Canon and Nikon were about 5 years behind Sony in getting their full frame mirrorless cameras and lenses to market, and have had catching up to do compared to Sony. Sony had its issues to start with too, and overcame them, as had Canon, and Nikon will too.

Use what camera you like and works best for you, but there is no reason to put down any camera brand this way, or anything else for that matter.

I shoot with Nikon (and Olympus), I thought it was very creative and the videography was great!

Some here seem far too serious! It was just a fun video and Nikon rhymed well.

And its great advertising for Nikon count how many times they say the name!

The current negativity towards Nikon is well deserved.
For years in this forum Canon was daily trashed about constantly changing "Mounts", which was a total lie as the R, FL and FD mount were all identical just added features like Nikon added about 12 different features to the F mount.
Yes, Canon did change in 1987 and as we can see now was an absolutely brilliant move when they did it.
Nikon fan boys attacked Canon while the Nikon ship was sinking not seeing the primitive F mount was way past expiration.
Well now it is painfully obvious Nikon was totally wrong clinging to the F mount so long and those Canon bashing Nikon fanboys are now getting what they mercilessly and gleefully dished out since 1987.

Could you, or anyone, please explain the potato?

I don't care a lick what products you make fun of to make me laugh, as long as you make me laugh. This video didn't do that, either because I'm dumb and didn't understand the relevance of the potato, or it was just a dumb video. The music, rhyme and the chick was OK but not funny. The potato was, well, just there, had no purpose, no socially redeeming value far as I could see.

If you do not see it, it cannot be explained.
It takes a basic sense of humor to enjoy.

OK, that explains it.
And if you think a potato stuck on the back of a lens is funny, check out this onion stuck on a lens.
It should bring a tear to your eye.
Now THIS is really funny, if you have a basic sense of humor of course...

In a hundred years, none of this will matter. Take the long view and enjoy whatever camera system you use.

You still miss the point.
It was the whole experience of song, action etc.
You are hopelessly lacking in the humor department.

Only the artist can explain it but I recall being called a potato head is not a compliment. Perhaps that is the symbolic message.

potato head

NOUN

1) derogatory A person's head likened to a potato, either in appearance, as being large, bald, ugly, etc., or as implying stupidity. Sometimes associated with Irishness.

2A) person whose head is likened to a potato; a stupid person, a fool. Also: a person from an area known for the cultivation of potatoes, especially Ireland; (hence) an unsophisticated person from a rural area; a country bumpkin, a hick.

3) US "Mr (also Mrs) Potato Head" noun and variants (a) (a trademark for) a children's toy consisting of plastic features, limbs, etc., intended to be stuck into a potato (or, in later use, a potato-shaped plastic body); (b) depreciative (a name for) a person regarded as ugly, peculiar-looking, or stupid.

Thanks, I guess that might be the thought. Instead of a camera body, a potato head... Bit of a stretch, and not a whole lot of humor in it, at least to a old coot with "no sense of humor." I always accuse the wife of having no sense of humor when I say something funny and she looks at me like I was a "potato head."
