Markngolf You think you are confused, well nothing compared to the Booby which is really confused and thinks it is a duck .... Your photo would have been remarkable because of rarity and there it was... in your pocket ready for action and like me... do not think cellphone... I am stuck in the camera era... but I will give myself credit for getting into digital quickly. However, that was based on film roll size... 36 exposures for film and 1200 for digital... wow at 3 Mpix.

Yes, our phones are the 24/7 camera that I shout about being a necessity ... but I usually shout the praises of my 24/7 SuperZoom Compact. I have an iPhone 8, but have used it as a camera [never] rarely.

The young know nothing but smartphone cameras... yes that is an overstatement, but almost true and more so every day. I am at times confounded by just how good smartphones are at dealing with photography. And!! the lens accessories are available for a low price compared to DSLR lenses... and do not weigh a ton.

Like Quick Draw McGraw, you and I need to practice drawing and shooting photos of jars on a fence post. Like the Booby, He is a fictional character... a white horse, wearing a red cowboy hat, a red holster belt, and a light blue bandana. Markngolf, is the Red-footed Booby really real??? Ouch dumb of me... it is a sea bird and so the webbed feet are for a purpose!! Swimming!!

Maybe, I'll remember my iphone is also a camera. I do and have used it. So, how do I fix my brain??

I know right, I was in the woods in 1975 and came into a clearing, there stood Sasquatch, the Lock Nest Monster, and an alien. And my camera was out of film. DUH!!!

Develop the habit of reaching for your phone to take photos by intentionally using it to do so. Use it to take photos of model numbers on equipment (super-useful for looking up repair parts), explore the time-lapse features, the portrait mode, practice zooming and face selection, exposure control, and so forth. Your brain will then be trained to grab it at a moment's notice.

My take on the matter is: Our brains can hold only so much information. At a certain point, some leakage occurs, plus the filing system stinks (it is just so random!). LOTS rattling around in our skull! Now, just where did I put...

Nice shot. I tend to think of my phone as a phone, too. I seldom use it as a camera.

Mark, don't feel bad. I never think of my iPhone as a camera. However, I never try to make calls using my camera either.

I have the iPhone 11 and the quality of images I can create with it is impressive. It is not quite as capable as my DSLR, but the dynamic range and color rendition are very high quality.

I normally have my cell phone and it's built in camera with me but my problem is that I'm usually slow in getting it out and ready to take a picture when a pop up opportunity arises! I think this affliction is something we all deal with. Nothing to worry about!!

Mark, I do the same thing. It just never seems to occur to me that not only can I talk on my cell phone, but that it can also actually take photos AND do other things. Even though my cameras also take video, I don't usually think to use them for other than taking stills. Isn't that what a "movie" camera is for? When you and I were (much) younger, a phone was to talk on, a camera was used to take still photos, and we had movie cameras for taking movies - with no one device having multiple functions. Each did its own thing. We just have to train our brains to "get with the program". For some - myself included - that's harder than for others.

BTW, that's a great photo of a Red-footed Boobie (sp?) that you didn't take!
Mark, I do the same thing. It just never seems to ... (show quote)

Thanks, Mike!! I do use the phone in many ways, including photos. You are correct - retraining the brain is necessary! I wonder if I have enough time?

Ask the red footed Booby??

Seriously, I NEVER think of using my cellphone until it's too late. Just last week I encountered a Coopers Hawk on the ground about 20" away. We stood and stared at each other then DUH! I reached for my phone and he flew away.

Another Mark
