I don't know about the mirrorless. I need to read up on them. I'm open to any suggestions. I have a lot of DX lenses that I would like to keep using.

If you have a good lens collection you might want to consider a D500.

I don't want the expense of an FX camera. I'm not a professional. I also want to use my DX lenses. My budget depends on the camera and it's usefulness.

I have a D500. It’s a fantastic camera. I also have a Z7 and I’m all in on mirrorless. Once the Z mount 200-600 is released I’ll probably sell my D500 and upgrade to a Z7II, (the Z9 is tempting but a budget buster). If I were staying in the DX realm I’d buy a Z50 or maybe the new Zfc, (I have to admit I love the retro look). A new D500 will set you back $1500, for about the same amount you can get the Z50 with the two lens kit and the FTZ adapter to use your existing DX lenses.

So by that logic I should be buying Justin Bieber albums instead of John Coltrane.

He has a nice smile. And Canadians are soooooo polite :-)

I have an old Nikon D5100 camera and I love it but I would like a new Nikon DX. Any suggestions.

WHY?
16mp should do almost everything, and that D5100 is a very good camera.
Better glass makes many a camera better,
Otherwise, I'd suggest a D780. Retail new now is @ half of opening price.
GREAT camera. You'll know how to use it.
