Hiking through the alpine meadows with glaciers in sight and small creeks everywhere is an incredible experience.

Looking forward to doing that.

Glacier N P is one of my favorite and great photography. I assume your talking about a Red Bus ride for the Going To The Sun Road which would be great because you'll get a narrative on what you're seeing. You can also drive it in your own vehicle. If you're staying at any or all of the three main park lodges, Lake McDonald, East Glacier and Many Glacier you will find much to do with walking/hiking trails, boat rides and guided tours. Many Glacier Lodge was my favorite and if you are staying there be sure to get up for the sunrise as you look west across the lake (away from the sun) as the sun gradually lights up the mountains. Can be viewed from the deck or the lake shore. If your adventurous there are also long hike and horseback trips, but I'm not familiar with them.

John,
We are staying in Kalispell, no room in the Park.
Thanks for the suggestion and information. Should be an adventure.

Hi Steve, Went about 14 years ago and loved all the hikes. Where are you staying? Even then, it was very hard to book places to stay so must be even more crowded now? Or are you staying outside the park? My favorite part (which you can't do now) was when we crossed over to the Canadian side and took the ferry on Waterton Lakes. Almost no people and there was a family of moose that we "ran into". However on the other hikes we got quite close to the big horned sheep and mountain goats (only saw bears way off in the distance.
Have a great time!
Richard
PS. Posted pics from our trip

Richard,
We are staying in Kalispell. No room in the Park at this late date.
Thanks for your information and especially the link to your GNP photos. They are beautiful, I hope to see some of those sights.
Thanks,
Steve

For a fun day trip, take the road that is on the west end of Lake Mcdonald. The road goes north to Polebridge. A tiny hamlet with a phenomenal bakery. Don't miss the bakery. Arrive before 2pm or all you'll get is a napkin.
Don't do any hiking unless you like bears.

Thanks for the suggestion, fresh baked goods and beautiful scenery are a combination made in heaven.
As far as bears my wife doesn’t have problems but I do, she can outrun me.
Thanks

If you book a boat tour on a lake along gts road they will let you in that day. Other wise you need to pass the booth by 0600

Thank you.

Part of the going to the sun road is still closed because of snow. As of yesterday there still plowing from what is listed on the website. Also if you get there before 6am and you don't need an entry ticket to get in.

Thank you.

First order of business --- be safe. I met a WW Rafting guide who lives very close to GNP and has never been inside the park. "The Bears have no rules." I carried Bear Spray and wore Bear Bells while walking around with my camera.
Going "next week" doesn't give you much time for research. Good stuff at each end. Lake McDonald in the west, St. Mary Lake in the east. Logan Pass/Hidden Lake Trail. Going-to-the-Sun Road is your friend. Turnouts abound. Many Glacier area for furry friends. And don't forget about Waterton Lakes NP

I was there in the fall 2019. If it's bright and sunny, your best photo opportunities will be in around sun up and sun down. I scoped out my locations during the day and then arrived before sun up with my tripod set up at earliest light. Consider taking a polarizer for the lakes.

Thanks for the tips, especially the polarization.

I spent a week there a couple of years ago. I had planned to drive the Road, but opted for the red bus tour. Not much opportunity for really good photos on the tour. And if you drive, you're fighting for a parking space and probably not getting one. My suggestion would be to visit every lake and do every hike you're capable of during your stay. Also, drive up to the Canadian park. It's beautiful also.

Thank you for the suggestions. I don’t think they are letting us into Canada due to the Pandemic.

I spent 4 days there in 2013 as part of an AMTRAK rail tour. Was dependent on their travel arrangements in the park, but they were very good. I'm not a hiker, so can't comment on that activity. My photos of the 4 days are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/collections/72157709326963332/

Logan Pass is near the middle of the GTTSR, so I suppose my coach ride included a lot of it.

At the top of Going to the Sun road it Logan Pass. Stop at the visitor center and take the hike behind the center to Image Lake. (I think that is the name, but it has been a while.) While the trail is uphill for a while the views all the way to the lake are spectacular. If you like wildlife I have seen Mountain Goats, Mountain Sheep, Ptarmigan, pica, Columbian ground squirrels and many other things on this trail. While still at the visitor center, cross the road and hike the Garden Wall trail. It is very long, but if you don't have a lot of time any part you choose to hike is incredible. I have a fear of heights, but if you do too, push past the fear, incredible views and the chances of seeing Mountain Goats or Sheep is high. If you have more time this trail goes to one of the back country Chalets where you can rest and buy a lunch. I think you can even book a reservation for overnight here, but it has been years since I have been there, so check, especially if you don't have much time before your trip, it may be all booked up. When we took this hike we continued past the Chalet down to Going to the Sun highway again and hitch hiked back to Logan Pass where our vehicle was. Spectacular hike. Be aware that this hike is in bear country and pay attention to recommendations about hiking here. We didn't see any Grizzlies on this hike, but many people do. There are many other hikes and all of them have their beauty, good luck and have a great time.

If staying at Many Glacier Lodge, take the Iceberg Lake hike and be prepared to take lots of landscape shots along the way, at the lake and of the stream that flows from the lake towards Many Glacier lodge. Other shorter trails at Many Glacier are wonderful too with vistas of mountains and lakes.

At Lake McDonald Lodge, photograph the lake shore line near the lodge in early morning light or at sunset. Remember to shoot when the sun is still below the horizon line. Read up on blue hour and twilight images in morning nd evening.

Definitely do the Going to the sun ? road trip. I hope you can stop at the top and hike and take photos.

Bring a polarizer filter to reduce glare from water surfaces of from foliage if you hike in the woods.
