We are heading out to Glacier National Park, next week, on our first outing since February 2020. We are going to be there four full days. Since we are driving, I will have a car load of photo equipment, hopefully covering any photo opportunity that springs up.

I am not very familiar with this National Park other than on the internet. I am looking for advice on what to see/do during our trip. Things we "must" not miss.

I am planning to get a ticket to the Going into the Sun Road through the internet at 8:00 a.m. Monday. If I don't get it then I will try the next day.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time.
Steve

If you aren't able to score a ticket to GTTSR online, I believe you can get through it if you're in the park suuuuper early. We haven't been up there yet this year, but I've heard through the grapevine that it's busier than ever, so be prepared!

Hiking through the alpine meadows with glaciers in sight and small creeks everywhere is an incredible experience.

Glacier N P is one of my favorite and great photography. I assume your talking about a Red Bus ride for the Going To The Sun Road which would be great because you'll get a narrative on what you're seeing. You can also drive it in your own vehicle. If you're staying at any or all of the three main park lodges, Lake McDonald, East Glacier and Many Glacier you will find much to do with walking/hiking trails, boat rides and guided tours. Many Glacier Lodge was my favorite and if you are staying there be sure to get up for the sunrise as you look west across the lake (away from the sun) as the sun gradually lights up the mountains. Can be viewed from the deck or the lake shore. If your adventurous there are also long hike and horseback trips, but I'm not familiar with them.

Hi Steve, Went about 14 years ago and loved all the hikes. Where are you staying? Even then, it was very hard to book places to stay so must be even more crowded now? Or are you staying outside the park? My favorite part (which you can't do now) was when we crossed over to the Canadian side and took the ferry on Waterton Lakes. Almost no people and there was a family of moose that we "ran into". However on the other hikes we got quite close to the big horned sheep and mountain goats (only saw bears way off in the distance.
Have a great time!
Richard

For a fun day trip, take the road that is on the west end of Lake Mcdonald. The road goes north to Polebridge. A tiny hamlet with a phenomenal bakery. Don't miss the bakery. Arrive before 2pm or all you'll get is a napkin.
Don't do any hiking unless you like bears.

If you book a boat tour on a lake along gts road they will let you in that day. Other wise you need to pass the booth by 0600

Part of the going to the sun road is still closed because of snow. As of yesterday there still plowing from what is listed on the website. Also if you get there before 6am and you don't need an entry ticket to get in.

First order of business --- be safe. I met a WW Rafting guide who lives very close to GNP and has never been inside the park. "The Bears have no rules." I carried Bear Spray and wore Bear Bells while walking around with my camera.
Going "next week" doesn't give you much time for research. Good stuff at each end. Lake McDonald in the west, St. Mary Lake in the east. Logan Pass/Hidden Lake Trail. Going-to-the-Sun Road is your friend. Turnouts abound. Many Glacier area for furry friends. And don't forget about Waterton Lakes NP

If you have not already done this, immediately book a red bus tour for your first full day in the park. Take your cell phone or small compact camera on this tour. This will give you the layout with helpful narratives of what the park has to offer. I did this in August of 2019 and would do it again if I was starting over.
I just checked and red bus tours may not be available next week.
