Computers not finding HDMI connections are very common. Easiest approach is to turn on the monitor (or HDMI switch or any switching amplifier or TV first). Lovely trick of Microsofts in the powering on of a computer but finding no video device attached to go to sleep or something. Sometimes you wonder what is wrong with MS's employees who set defaults.

This newish Dell also usually gives me that message when it wakes up, but then it finds the monitor.
