Other than newsweek being extremely biased I see it as giving Trump credit for the mission act and getting rid of Obamas 'roadblocks' to getting care on the outside. After Trump got elected I saw many firings in the va, including my doctor who needed to be fired. Even after that so called doctors with the va get away with murder that doctors on the outside couldn't get away with. I've got a doctor now that I haven't even met and don't care to. For years vets have told horror stories about the va and some doctors and I completely agree. I've got stories of my own about the incompetence of va doctors including my current one. I've seen the help Trump gave vets so a biased opinion really doesn't carry weight with anyone who is in the middle of it.

You can find the same fact checking accuracy by doing it yourself. trump cannot take credit for VA choice which began in 2014. I applaud that he extended the program; just tired of his lies. I work with TriCare members who are also eligible for Medicare. Healthcare, in general, is a local consideration. If there is a large base and military population nearby, then quality care is much easier to find. If not, it’s a crap shoot. Our local vets need to travel over 2 hours to Nashville for quality care for their service-related care and use Medicare providers or VA choice clinics for non-service related illnesses. Agent Orange related care is the most prevalent diagnosis requiring travel to Nashville. Your anecdotal experience, while important to you, is not one experienced by all. The fact that you still have crappy doctors should tell you that things are not good at VA healthcare.

The part I find unacceptable is these doctors pretty much answer to no one and can do pretty much as they please. I irritated my first va doctor by checking a medication out with the company that made it. When he found out I had the audacity to check with the company even though I had asked him the question a few times with no answer he withheld the medication a few days past time it was due again. This was a med that was not to be missed doses due to the bad side effects when missing a dose. He knew what he was doing by the conversations we had about it. My new doc does the same thing. They show you not to question them in very un-ethical ways. I have run checks on my newest so called doctor who is a female and found that she is rated a 1 out of 5 on some doctor review sites with some bad reviews from everyone who reviewed. They can't make it on the outside so they join the va for protection and a paycheck. VA doctors are protected from personal suits.

I agree! You’ve had horrible experiences. You do have recourse, but it isn’t easy. It’s really not very easy under non-VA either.

I find that younger doctors are more open to answering questions. They’ve become used to patients doing an online search prior to appointments. Older doctors (especially the ones with God complexes) aren’t as receptive.
